Partnership in Ministry
Dr. Charles A Daniels
The ministry office of the Apostle and the body of Christ are together in forming a partnership in the ministry. It is important that the body of Christ has a clear understanding of their role in cooperating with their senior partner. The book of Philippians gives us specific details of partnership ministry. A partnership is an associate and a sharing partner in the same venture or joint interest. Being in partnership with your senior partner is the key to getting your own needs met. God will supply all the needs of those in partnership with their senior partner.
The Apostle Paul was in a Roman prison writing a letter to his faithful partners in Philippi. He was not writing as “Paul the Apostle,” even though he was an apostle at this time, he was writing as their senior partner who desires to help them stay united as partners. At this point they were beginning to break away from the fellowship and to stand firm against the developing persecution; they were beginning to cooperate. Paul is writing as a servant of Christ Jesus sharing the gospel of Christ. Christ apprehended Paul’s life and transformed him into someone who lived to be a channel of God’s grace. Paul is all about the gospel, the Son of God, and attracting the wrath of God for everyone who accepts him as his or her Lord and savior. Paul is giving his life so that God would be glorified and people would be saved from eternal death.
The gospel is so important to Paul that while in prison he says, “I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.” – Philippians 1:12-14. He explains the reason for his imprisonment and the significance of the gospel message that they both shared. The Apostle Paul established the Philippians church by receiving a vision from God ten years earlier according to Acts 16:9-10. While under house arrest he writes them a partnership letter to encourage and thank them for their partnership in ministry. He wrote the Philippians believers to commend them for sharing partnership in ministry.
The Philippians church had entered into partnership and joint participation with the Apostle Paul. Although he established twenty- two churches, only the Philippians church entered into partnership with him. The Philippians church was the only church that communicated with him in regards to giving and receiving by financially supporting his ministry. His partners in ministry were recorded in Philippians 1:1; "Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons." It is the responsibility of those in ministry to equip the saints for the work of the ministry.
