Directing Change Mini Grant Opportunity for Los Angeles County Districts and Schools
The Directing Change Program & Film Contest is thrilled to announce a new Mini Grant Opportunity for Schools and Districts in Los Angeles County! The Directing Change Program & Film Contest engages youth to learn about the topics of suicide prevention and mental health by creating short films that are used to support awareness, education and advocacy efforts across the state, in their communities, and on their campuses. Participants have a chance to win cash prizes, meet with film making professionals, and attend an award ceremony in May.
Eligible Organizations: Schools and districts working with students in grades 6-12 in Los Angeles County. Public, private, and charter schools and districts are all eligible to apply.
Mini Grant Funding: $1,500 to implement the Directing Change Program & Film Contest in a classroom setting.
Requirements:
- Facilitate participation of at least one classroom in the Directing Change program during the 2019-20 school year, resulting in a minimum of five film submissions by the submission deadline: March 1, 2020.
- Teach at least one Directing Change mental health or suicide prevention lesson in a classroom on campus.
- Plan and implement an awareness event on campus which includes screening of the youth-produced films to peers and/or parents in May 2020.

Mini-Grant Opportunities for K-12 Teachers
Keeping History Alive and Bringing STEM to Life awards mini-grants of $250-$850 to K-12 teachers of history and STEM in Los Angeles County. The mini-grants assist teachers in public, private, charter, and parochial schools with classroom resources, field trips, on-campus presentations, and/or professional development. Applications due: October 31, 2019

TurnitIn After School Workshop for all secondary teachers who incorporate writing in their content area.
Turnitin is a great tool that supports a curriculum focused on communication and collaboration skills. It is so much more than just a plagiarism checker! With Feedback Studio and PeerMark, you can save yourself hours of work from grading. Here are some time-saving features teachers love: voice and text comments, rubric grading, automatic grammar check, and peer feedback.
This is a hands-on workshop open to all secondary teachers who incorporate writing in their content area, not just those who teach English Language Arts. Turnitin accepts a variety of file types such as Google Docs, Google Slides (if converted to PDF format), Excel, and PowerPoint.
Training Date: November 4, 2019
Training Time: 3:15pm to 4:15pm
Training Location: Ed Services Training Room, District Office

ALUMNI/FACULTY SOCCER GAME - NOVEMBER 8
Time to dust off those old cleats and represent the staff at the new annual Boys Soccer Alumni/Faculty soccer game. This year the game will take place on Friday, November 8, from 3 to 4:30 pm.
A free snack and Gatorade will be given to all participants. Anyone interested in participating, please contact nblackford@wvusd.k12.ca.us.
If you would like to watch the game, there is free entry and the concessions stand will be open. We are also looking for volunteers to help announce, run the score board, and take video of the game.
WHS vs. DBHS STAFF BASKETBALL GAME - NOVEMBER 8
Boys Basketball is hosting our annual staff basketball fundraiser game on Friday, NOVEMBER 8th at 6:00. We would love to have you be a part of this event. If you would like to play in the game, Be a coach, sing the national anthem, sell tickets or help us out in any other way please let me know. The more staff members that we have involved the more fun the atmosphere will be. This game will be against the Diamondbar Staff.

The Blue Thunder Starts the Season Off Right!
AF Team holds "Take Care of Yourself" Tutorial
Last year, Marissa Beemer started “Take Care of Yourself” tutorials. Marissa and the AF team held their first one on October 10th (which was also World Mental Health Day). They had students do some line dancing and de-stress a bit as we hit the halfway point this semester.
Our AP EL Students are making progress!
In 2018 we had 57 exams given to EL students with a 68% pass rate.
In 2019 we had 89 exams given to EL students with a 74% pass rate.
Keep doing what you are doing AP team! Your hard work and investment in our EL population is paying off.
