Mrs. Hladun's Tidings

Next week, Sami Kader from Sami's Circuit will be visiting us on Monday and Thursday! We'll be celebrating a healthy mindset and healthy choices for our body with support from Sami's powerful story and message! Remember - you got this! There will be a super fun Family Night on Thursday, 11/7 at 5 pm in the MPR - watch for RSVP information soon!

Sami will be meeting up with our Gr. 1-5 students on Halloween for his high energy, action packed physical activity circuit. Per the email sent to all families on 10/25, here is our guidance on Halloween costumes at school:

  • TK is asking students not to wear costumes - instead they will be hosting a PJ day on Friday, 11/1!

  • K is welcoming costumes in their classrooms

  • Gr. 1-5 students are encouraged to participate in our “sports day/work out wear” dress up day on Halloween so that they are ready to have a blast with Sami during their grade level circuit. Costumes are strongly discouraged.

Also, we are getting ready for our Veteran's Day celebration - bring in up to 3 pictures of loved ones who are veterans or on active duty - be sure the pics are copies (not originals) and that you label the pictures with your student's name/teacher and the name of person photographed. You can drop photos off in the office or with your child's teacher on/before Fri., 11/1.

Coming Soon!

Conferences, Trimester Awards, and Winter Performances, oh my! This time of year is always busy. A few things for your radar:

  • "We Honor You" Veterans Day Celebration will be held on Th., 11/14. There will be student assemblies on Th., 11/14 at 8:20 am and 2 pm, and a community performance at 6:30 pm.
  • Conferences will be scheduled the week of 11/18 (students are out of school at 12:30 that week!) Some teachers may schedule times the week of 11/12, too. Most teachers will use Canyon Creek to schedule times. Please be watching for communication from your teacher to sign up for a conference time in the first week of November! Our goal is to meet with EVERY family in November!
  • Trimester 1 awards are coming soon! We love to honor our Colts for a job well done in the classroom! Stay tuned for the dates/ the newsletter and calendar for details!
  • Our Winter Performances are always special and spectacular. The exact times are posted on our calendar, but plan for: Grades 1 & 2 on Tuesday, 12/10 and Grades 3-5 on Thursday, 12/12
  • There will be a pop up book fair on either 12/10 or 12/12 (we are trying to coordinate both nights!) - stay tuned!

Morning Drop Off

We ask that families drop off their grade 1-5 child between 7:55 and 8:10 am each morning. Students are welcome onto campus starting promptly at 7:55 am. We have noticed an uptick in early arrivals - we have many students arriving as early as 7:15 am. Most days, there are between 50 and 100 students here by 7:45 am. That's a lot of little bodies with idle time and no supervision, which doesn't always work well.

Please do not drop your children off or send your children to school to arrive before 7:55 am. Some families chose to use STAR for before school support, or they have their child arrive by 7:45 am and have breakfast in our cafeteria, or they set up neighborhood walk/bike/carpools so that their child is supervised when parents/guardians have to go to work early.

We appreciate your support - your child's safety is important to us!

Believe Update

Wow! PTC is thrilled announce that our Believe fundraiser was a big success! The fundraiser brought in over $15,000 in profit. The products will be delivered to school on Tuesday, 10/29. As soon as the items are organized, we'll push out a notification via social media. Items must be picked up by 6 pm from the MPR!

The funds raised support the overall PTC budget, which funds teacher classrooms, art docent, technology, community building activities, and more.

Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Shelton's class were the top sellers, and they'll earn a class pizza party! Congratulations!

Boundary Study/2020-2021 Registration Update

NEW INFORMATION: none this week

Please know that REGISTRATION will be running from mid December to early January this year (including TK registration, K registration and returning student commitments). In addition, the district will be accepting and processing INTRADISTRICT requests in January/early February, too. Please let your friends and neighbors know so they aren't caught by surprise, and they have access to any/all options!

At the School Board meeting on 9/17/19, Superintendent Leaman shared three options for the potential boundaries for LCES and SLES. Mr. Leaman will be hosting community meetings in the coming months to share the boundary options, to share potential ways that students will be assigned to schools (i.e. 5th graders, students on intras, etc...) and to collect input from families. The board will be making a decision in November (this date is new information!) so that the district is prepared for enrollment and staffing decisions that need to come in early 2020. Stay tuned for the dates/times/locations.

There will also be discussion and decisions this winter about extended day kindergarten options at each WPUSD elementary school as well as a decision to come about where the district's new dual immersion program will be housed.

Here is a color version of the various boundary options that are being considered:
