Principal’s News

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that cool evenings and mornings are already here! What a change a week brings. Please make sure to dress your child appropriately for the changing weather as we will go outside if the wind chill is above 32 degrees and below 95 degrees. Along with seasonal changes we have some exciting changes coming to our building. We will welcome the district Parents as Teachers program to our SMISC family this month. And most exciting of all, have you ever wondered what SMISC or Shawnee Mission Instructional Support Center means? We have been given an amazing opportunity to change our building name to one that really reflects what we are all about. We would like your input too! Please click on this link to cast your vote!

Help Us Keep Kids Safe!

We need your help keeping ours students safe. A reminder ALL visitors to SMISC are asked to sign in at the office and you will be asked to show photo identification. At the time of sign-in you will be given a visitor sticker which you are asked to wear during the entire length of your visit and to return as you sign-out. Families who drop off and pick up students from west side of the building (where busses drop off and pick up); please have children stand with you while waiting. We want all children to be safe so please keep them from running back and forth on the patio area. We have had unsafe incidents occur due to the use of cell phones so please remember it is our policy to not have cell phones out during drop-off and pick up. That includes walking in the crosswalk area. Thanks for your cooperation on both of these issues.

Upcoming Events

We had a wonderful turn out for Open House and hope to continue the pattern with high attendance at Parent Teacher Conferences (Oct. 19th & Oct. 20th). Your support of your child may be one of the most important factors in determining their success in school. You should have received a scheduled appointment time with your classroom teacher, if you do not have one or have forgotten please call the office or your teacher and we will be happy to get that set up for you. Please note there will be no school for PK students on Oct. 13th and 14th for Teacher Professional Development, and Oct. 19th, Oct. 20th, and 21st for Parent Teacher Conferences.

We have many wonderful learning opportunities planned for our students this month from pumpkins, fall, and leaves to fire safety. Please ask them about the things they are learning about in school. We recently learned that a child has to hear a new word or concept 2000 (!) times before it moves from short term memory to long term memory!! Keep those conversations going with your kids!

We love our SMISC families and would love to have you volunteer in our building. Do you have a special talent you would like to share with our students? Do you play an instrument, are you a great story teller, do you have an interesting job? Let us know- we are always on the look out for new learning experiences for our students. If you would like to share a talent with us PLEASE email me at jennifertilley@smsd.org.

We will end this month with our Fall Party. We are going to try a new approach to our fall parties and will be looking for parent volunteers to help us run stations in our gym. Please consider working a shift during our fall party. More information coming very soon. until then……

Nurse's Notes

We will be conducting vision and hearing screenings late October/early November. Periodic hearing and vision screenings are required by the state of Kansas. You will only be notified of results if your child’s screening warrants follow up or referral. These are only screenings and do not take the place of a through exam by a licensed physician. Please remember to have your child wear their glasses daily. This not only helps them get in the habit of wearing them but also promotes their learning. If you prefer your child opt out of screening, please send a signed note to school or call the nurse. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you and Happy Fall!

Happy September/October!

One of the apps our teachers are using is called Seesaw. This is a student portfolio app and a great way for our staff to connect with families. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, please do so. We want you to see all the great things your children are learning at school!

Something we are always working on here at SMISC is play! Did you know that our students learn a great deal through play? During play students can work on concepts (up, down, under, etc.),literacy, and math, to name a few areas. You can help them count blocks or cars, talk about what colors they see, or make up pretend scenarios while you play together. There are so many opportunities! For more information go to 10 Things Every Parent Should Know about Play Enjoy!

Until next time: Learn, Teach, Reflect, Grow, Repeat . . . . !
