MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
Mount Vernon scholars do a great job of taking advantage of the opportunities afforded to them, and I was proud to see Terrence Barnes, a Rebecca Turner Academy student, take advantage of the expansion of Ford’s Automotive Career Exploration program into RTA. The students at RTA are important to us, and they deserve to have a broad range of opportunities. Terrence’s enrollment in the automotive program will allow him to explore a career that he may be interested in while he is still in high school, giving him a head start on his future plans.
Benjamin Turner Academy students were treated to a fun science lesson this week when a demonstrator from Mad Science visited on Wednesday. Making learning fun allows students to take a greater interest in school, and they get excited about school when they know it will be fun. Learning valuable science skills through exciting experiments and demonstrations will give these students a passion to learn more and continue exploring the possibilities of scientific experiments.
At Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School, Mount Vernon STEAM Academy students taught a lesson to the elementary students by themselves. They worked hard to prepare their lessons, and they delivered exemplary instruction. The younger students were excited to learn from their older peers, so it was a great learning experience for both groups of students. Our students share a community, so it’s good to see them connecting with each other through academics.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools
