Principal Message
We are very excited about how well the first six weeks of school has gone for our staff and students. We would like to welcome our many new families to our school. We hope you will find Gleason a great place for your child to grow academically and behaviorally. If you haven't already had a chance to join our Gleason PTO and purchase spirit wear, please go to www.gleasonpto.membershiptookit.com Your support is greatly appreciated. It is also hard to believe that almost one fourth of our school year is almost completed. Our first nine weeks will end on October 26th. Please look for report cards to come home on November 2nd.
We hope you will join us on October 23rd from 6:00-7:30 for our Family Reading Nigh in the Enchanted Forest. We have many hands-on literacy activities planned for our students to enjoy with their families. Several food trucks will also be here.
On November 9, 2018, the students and staff at Gleason will celebrate Veteran’s Day with a ceremony honoring those who have served or are currently serving in the military. Our ceremony will include a parade of flags carried by each grade level. Please mark your calendar for this event. More information will come home on Oct. 19th.
A Note from the Nurse....Mrs. Compton
The student flu immunization clinic will take place on October 25th. Permission forms can still be turned in, or you can sign up online at cyfairisdflu.com
Hearing and Vision Screening was a huge success. Thank you to our parent volunteers for their help. Referrals for vision have been sent out. CFISD offers a great program called “SEE TO SUCCEED.” This event takes place in January and information was sent along with the referral. If you have any questions/concerns, please let me know how I can help.
The clinic is also in need of both boys and girls winter clothes, pants especially. Gently used clothing that meet the school dress code are appreciated. Clothing can be dropped off at the clinic. Thank you!
From the Library....Mrs. Jones
Name That Book
All students 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade students will be participating in the NAME THAT BOOK PROGRAM by reading the fabulous books. The mission of the Name That Book (NTB) Program is to foster a life-long love of reading in all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. A list of books that encompasses a wide variety of genres has been provided, and students are encouraged to read as many as possible. The 100 books are chosen by CFISD librarians and are available at our library.
This program culminates annually with a series of contests to celebrate the students’ comprehensive knowledge of the books. Students participate at the team level by reading at least 6 books from the list. In November, teams will be formed within their grade levels.

Pre-Kindergarten
Our Pre-kinder student have learn so much in the first few weeks of school! In language arts, we will continue to learn letters and sounds as well as recognize our names and our friends' names. We are working on following two step oral directions and participating in class. In math, we are counting to 10 with one to one correspondence. We are continuing to make patterns and explain our sorts. We will learn about the four seasons with a focus on fall.
Kindergarten
We had a wonderful first month of school in Kindergarten! We are becoming readers. We read every day to increase our reading stamina. We look at the pictures, read everything we see, and we take care of our books. We enjoy being writers. We have learned about the authors Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr. We are generating an idea and expressing that idea through pictures and words. In math, we are learning to recognize the numbers 1-5 instantly. We are learning to compose and decompose numbers up to 5. We wish our classmates well, think of ways to be good friends, and learn to become problem solvers during our daily class meetings.
First Grade
We have had a great first month in first grade! We are getting to know all of our students and building relationships during our class meetings. We have exciting things happening this month. We will have the chicks soon and students will be learning about the life cycle and watch them hatch! Fun clubs will begin and First grade will be playing games and solving puzzles.
In Reading we will continue to learn the use of strategies to figure out unknown words such as: looking at the pictures getting our mouth ready, sounding it out and reading with fluency to better understand the story. We will make connections from text to self, text to text and text to world.
In Writing we will focus on creating small moment stories (personal narratives). We will learn revision and editing strategies. In writing conventions we will learn about writing complete sentences adding capital letters at the beginning and ending with a period.
In Math we will continue solving word problems using our problem solving plan. We will also take our beginning of our year math DPM assessment. We will begin our graphing unit.
Second Grade
2nd grade has been working on decomposing and composing numbers using. We have also been working hard on deepening our understanding place value. In science, students have been learning about safety rules, observing and collecting data. Soon we will begin learning all about matter.
In Reading Workshop, we have been learning our roles and responsibilities. We have been focusing on staying engaged and focusing while reading. Our poetry unit is coming up and we are excited to read poetry with fluency. We have also become authors in writing! We began writing small moment stories about ourselves. Reading Response letters are coming up and we can’t wait to write letters to friends about the books we have read.
Third Grade
Our third grade readers have wrapped up their poetry unit! We’ll now dive into fiction, where we will learn how to make inferences about our characters, identify conflict, and more. We’ll also begin fiction book clubs which will keep us busy throughout the month of October. This would be a great time to have daily conversations with your child about the book they’re reading. In writing, we’ve celebrated completing our first personal narrative! For the remainder of the month, we will be focused on how our reading connects to our writing and the purpose behind writing letters.
We have finished our units on place value and rounding! We are in the middle of our unit on adding and subtracting in real life situations. Ask your child what is their favorite way to add or subtract. They will surprise you. In science, we have wrapped up our unit on energy and have started on the states of matter. We will look into how matter changes through heating and cooling matter. Explore the different types of matter around you and your child and discuss how it can change or has changed. Nature trails is October 9th (Mrs. Gallardo, Ms. Sison, Ms. Zabranek, Ms. Garcia) and Oct 10th (Ms. Bertelsen, Mrs.Nguyen, Mr. Becker, Mrs. Nativi)

We will have a checkpoint on October 17th. In Science, we will explore the next unit of study in weather where students will discuss the water cycle. Our writers will plan their personal narratives. Students will revise their writing by adding & deleting details, creating smooth transitions, and hooking the reader into their stories with a lead. Our first checkpoint will be on October 17th. Our readers are starting their work with nonfiction. Students will read a variety of nonfiction texts to explore various text structures and text features. After reading a variety of nonfiction texts, students will sift out important details to determine a main idea and create summaries. Our first checkpoint will be on October 16th.
We encourage you to stay up to date on our 4th grade community.
