Holland Intermediate Weekly Update
November 14, 2022
Principal Message
Hi Holland Families,
We have reached the final week before Thanksgiving break. Friday will be an early dismissal for students which means we let them out at 10:45. There will be breakfast, but no lunch that day. Just a reminder that the 18th is the final day of the 1st trimester. The 2nd trimester will begin on November 28th. Your student will be beginning a new special for that trimester. Your homeroom teacher will communicate this to your student.
Our lost and found has accumulated quite a bit of coats and hoodies. Please remind your students to look through these before they leave for Thanksgiving or Winter break.

Helping Springfield Schools Families in Need 2022
The Holland/Springfield community’s “Helping Hand Committee” has again joined forces with the district to make the holidays a little brighter for Springfield Schools’ families. As we have done in previous years, staff and students at each school are being asked to donate specific items for the Christmas food baskets. Our goal for Holland Intermediate is 150 cans of frosting, 150 boxes of Jiffy Corn Mix, and 50 cans of Cream of Mushroom Soup. The following groups will be responsible for each item.
4th grade: Cans of Frosting
5th Grade: Jiffy Corn Mix
Staff: Cream of Mushroom Soup
The drive begins November 7th and goes until November 18th
Boxes will be set outside the main office for each item. Please make sure items are not expired before drop off. If we can meet our building goal we will have a school-wide pajama day on our first day back from Thanksgiving break.
Title I Schools Guidelines
Federal guidelines require Title I schools to hold an annual parent meeting to explain and discuss the Title I schoolwide program and requirements. Below you will find the Parent Compact for your review and the link to the slide show that was presented at the meeting November 2.
A message from Mr. G...
How have we made it almost to Fall break?! This past week I had the opportunity to hangout as part of PBIS rewards with so many amazing students! This week my class lessons focus on how our brain reacts to emotions and calming skills we can utilize to get our brain back on track. This week I will be starting my stress group, which I am very excited to work on mindfulness and calming strategies. Our first Kindness Club meeting went off perfectly! Students had the opportunity to meet one another and collaborate on ideas for the year

Restroom Issues
As a staff, we have been very proactive with visiting the classrooms and having these discussions. We have instituted some various rules about time of use and adult supervision. Personally, I don't like making so many rules, but it is clear that we have students with bad intentions. If a student is caught intentionally doing things to the restrooms, then strong consequences will be considered. Please have these discussions with your child about being respectful to property. Thank you!
Introducing Pumpkin Spice!
We would like to introduce Pumpkin Spice. She is the calf we adopted. She lives on a dairy farm in Ohio. We will be receiving information, live stream videos, picture updates as she grows into a dairy cow. We will have virtual field trips to the farm and learn about the dairy farms, the cows, and milk. This is a great learning opportunity for the students and they love watching our calf grow.

Free or Reduced Lunch Applications
Families need to fill out this application on a yearly basis. If you qualified last year, then the application expired as of October 6th. This means that students are charged for lunch and have a negative balance if the parents have not reapplied. Once a student has a negative balance, they are only eligible for a cheese sandwich/ peanut butter sandwich, a side, a fruit, and a milk. Staff members are not permitted to purchase lunch for students.
Applications are available online through the school website. Click the icon on the main page the says Free & Reduced Meal Application. This will take you to the EZMeal App and you can apply or reapply. Approval will take 1-2 business days. You will get an email confirmation or a paper in the mail. Of course, families can call the office to see if they have been approved. Thank you for your cooperation with this process.

Success
We currently have 3 teams in 4th grade and four teams in 5th grade. Each team will have their own video game theme, and we hope it will provide some fun and healthy competition throughout the school year.
Arrival and Dismissal
As expected, the carloop and bus loop has gotten quicker by the day. Please DO NOT drop your student off on Madison St. in front of the school. This is a major safety concern for the students. We continue to monitor ways to improve the process. Parents are permitted to turn left out of the carloop. Parents do have the option of parking in the endzone lot and walking over to get their child. If you plan to do this, then please let your child know. Thank you for your cooperation.

PBIS Rewards:
As the new school year kicks off with shiny new school supplies and big plans for the year, it’s also a good time to begin changing your school culture and climate. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, or PBIS, can help your school chart a new path toward improved behavior, effective social and emotional learning, and increased academic success. Employing the PBIS framework can make the task more manageable. The key to an effective PBIS implementation is an “all-in” mentality among teachers, parents, staff, guardians and administrators in a school. For PBIS to produce positive change in a school’s climate, it needs to be employed school-wide and with consistency.
Communication With Home
Involving families in your PBIS initiative will help students to practice positive behaviors outside the school. Parents and guardians can take an active role in reinforcing these behaviors. They also can be notified if their student is struggling with meeting the behavioral goals established by the schoolwide matrix. Families want to hear about the positive behaviors their students exhibit. Parents, please download the app for use. Parents will receive a letter and QR code the first week of school to set your child up.

Parent Handbook
If you haven't become familiar with the parent handbook, then here is a link to review. I want to highlight a few rules that students need to follow during the school day.
- Students are not to bring in toys or sports equipment for recess.
- Students are not permitted to wear hoods, hats, coats, scarves, or gloves in the school unless permitted by the Principal.
- Student cell phones need to stay in their lockers and turned off. Parents will have to pick up phones if confiscated for misuse.
- Students need to bring their own water bottles for the filling station. Cups will not be provided.
Introducing the TutorSmart Program
I want to pass along this amazing resource shared with our district. The Toledo Lucas County Library (including Holland Branch) have created a program called TutorSmart. This is a whole curriculum, with certified teachers present, etc. and it is being offered free of charge at all Library locations. Holland Branch hosts Monday-Thursday, 6:30-7:30. See the flyer below for more information on how to learn more.
