Levels of Consciousness
Awareness of ourselves and our enviroment
Conscious Level
Pre- conscious Level
• Automatic behaviors – these are things you guys usually call muscle memory. It is technically procedural memory , things like walking, talking, tying a shoe, brushing your teeth etc. You don’t need intentionally focus on doing them, but they are just below the surface and you can focus on them if you have to.
• Tip of the Tongue Phenomenon – this is when you are trying to remember a person’s name, or TV show, or a word and it just won’t crystalize in your mind; it keeps slipping away from you. Its preconscious because it is right below the surface waiting for you to grab it and bring it up.
• Subliminal Perception – the info was below your absolute threshold, but some of it seeps in; you are primed by and will draw it into your consciousness if cued the right way.
• Blindsight – one of your feature detectors is damaged so you cannot see some aspect of your visual field, but the you can see the remainder of it. So, if asked the right questions you may not be able to see the horizontal line, but you can say the correct color of them.
Sub- conscious Level
• A hypnotist tells you to feel relaxed every time you see a body of water, but because of your state of hypnosis you do not remember the suggestion. It is deep down in your consciousness and will affect you when you look at water.
• Traumatic events are pushed deep down, so you are not constantly stressed out by them. You were abused by a male relative as a child, but don’t actively think about it. However, you cannot form close relationships with males, in your current life, because this hidden betrayal makes you distrustful of them.
