Wild West Book Fair is Coming!
Dear Parents and Families:
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
- Set the example. Let children see you read.
- Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
- Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Here are the dates and times for the rest of the fair.

Counselor's Corner
Thank you for your commitment to your child’s education! This is an attendance update for all parents. We are proud that Dyer has a history of excellent attendance. Let’s keep it that way by having all students present and on time as much as possible.
We are slightly above the county average for tardies. Students can enter the building at 7:45 for breakfast and to begin learning right away. Students are counted tardy as of 8:15. Arriving late does not make for a stress-free relaxed beginning of the day. They also miss the morning announcements. Children who ride the bus always arrive before 8:00.
The attendance record of students at all public schools is evaluated yearly as part of the Georgia College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI). Once students accumulate six absences (excused or unexcused), our school’s overall attendance record is negatively impacted. This correlates with research from the Georgia Department of Education, which indicates that missing more than five days of school each year begins to impact student academic performance and starts shaping our children’s attitudes about school. Students should attend school every day, arrive on time, and remain at school for the entire day unless there is a contagious illness or serious reason for being absent. Please attempt to make doctor and dentist appointments after school hours and avoid taking off the whole day for check-ups. Coming to school before 11:30 or not checking out until after that time keeps your child from being counted absent for the day. If your child has a chronic medical condition, please document this with the school if you have not already done so.
Also please keep in mind that taking additional days off around student holidays (such as the upcoming one on October 9th) can add up to many absences over the course of the year, especially if your child also becomes ill at some point. If you have questions concerning your child’s attendance or if there is a problem that the school can help resolve, please contact the counselor, Dawn Garner, at dawn_garner@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
We appreciate your involvement and support!
