Genrefication
The Lazy Librarians Guide
I wonder if...
Have you ever thought...
- "I want to get the books moving off the shelves, but genrefication seems like too much work,"
- "I want to genrefy, but I don't have a para or anyone to help."
- "Genrefication looks great, but it must be terrible to manage...I'm not going to recatalog every book."
Supplies
Demco Color-Tinted Glossy Label Protectors
Use these label protectors to go over the spine labels on your books. Each genre section will get their own color.
Signage
You will need signage to help the students find their way around the new system. Buy some that are premade or design your own.
Genres
Next, decide what genres you will have in your library. Check out this great blog post from the Mighty Little Librarian to get some ideas.

Step By Step Guide
- Decide what genres you will be using.
- Start sorting the books into their different genres.
- Place the color-tinted labels on the corresponding books (ie blue for mystery, pink for romance)
- Make the change in the library system. We have Destiny, so we changed each books sub location to say the books genre name.
