Te Aroha Primary School
Term 1 Week 3 2022

PRINCIPAL /TUMUAKI MESSAGE
Kia ora katou
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away………….
Kei te pēhea koutou katoa? How are you all?
I sure hope you have been coping with the heat and mugginess we have been experiencing. And to top it all off - unreal wind. The coast road from Coro to Thames was debris-strewn (that’s powerful :) ) especially from Te Mata to Thames. Trees wind-pruned, rocks rolling and surf waves all along the coast.
I’ve been here in Te Aroha for 2 weeks now and am loving your kura - it’s got the best and most dedicated team working hard for your children - an effective Board of Trustees, awesome support staff and the coolest teachers - let alone students helping students. The road patrollers, lunch monitors, librarians and a host of other responsibilities your children take on.
The efforts of staff are shown off in the students’ attitude overall, efforts, pride and willingness to help their own learning.
We can’t do it without all components meshing together so please thank your children as we do for their efforts. Some will always find it more difficult than others to assimilate learning - I do know it was hard for me but I got there. (I believe :) )
WAIT FOR IT….. !!! NEW LOOK NEWSLETTER NEXT WEEK
Student-led, student-driven news you will love to read about or your child will read it to you if necessary.
Each week - apart from a short teacher portion to keep parents informed, there will be a team focus with the Seniors R8, 9 and 10 leading the way. There will of course be lunch menu inserts. My Office Organiser’s Press Release function (Office Organisers are 3 determined young ladies who have made it very clear they wish to help me in many ways :)) will kick in and they will be the bosses of our newsletter to whanau and community.
I am more than positive you will hang out for each Monday’s pānui!
Murray McDonald
Yr 7/8 Immunisations
Our Yr 7/8 students need to return their Immunisation forms back to their teacher by tomorrow (Tues 15/2) so these can be collected by the Public Health Nurse. Please make sure you have completed the relevant sections fully, even if your child is not receiving the immunisation.
Yr 7/8 Technology
An awesome first session of Tech last week. Please remember your child needs to have long hair tied up, shoes that cover their feet and to have a mask to wear on the bus and at the College. Please also let your child's teacher know via seesaw or email if your child is going to be meeting us at the College.
Roll call at 8.30am outside Rm 10.
The Power of Student Voice and Action
I am delighted to have several very important people advising and organising me and are promoting some of the school’s visible culture - their input is appreciated and they are showing me what great all-round students they are - and what TAPS is delivering to our planet.
- My “Gofer” crew - movers and shakers - constructors and assemblers- Elisa, Lockie and Dayshaun
- My “Office Organisers” - displays, communications aides, problem-solvers and advisors - Elisa, Perryn and Nicole
- My Tech Team - all sorts of help with tecchie stuff - Brody and Bella
- My Junior Fix-its - keep an eye out on maintenance needed in junior play areas - Harley and Kayne
Some of the team efforts so far:
- Office Organisers - Lucy’s office reception area is being reorganised - The OO team have displayed the Te Aroha Primary School student attributes we all strive to make a reality with your child and are gaining momentum with newsletter ownership
- Tech Team - Have begun converting around 20 donated laptop computers to chromebooks which means students can use them - well done - awesome effort
- Gofer Crew - no instructions given or needed - the problem-solving capacity of this team had my new draughtsman chair (high riser :) ) operating perfectly in a short time
- Junior Fix-its - identified non-functioning aspects of the Junior playground and helped me fix it :) Mr Rasmussen is well on board with this team also and fixed some loose timber pieces.

Statement from the Office Organisers (OO’s)
Hi, we are the OO’s, a group of 3 - Perryn, Nicole and Elisa. One of our more important projects at the moment is our “female” work in progress. BEA stand for Behaviour Effort and Attitude,
The reason we wished to create a female version of BAS is because we think of students as both genders. Even our teaching staff is nearly all female! Watch this space :)
Some of our other projects include office redesigning, hallway decorating and starting next Monday the OO’s will be writing an exclusive section of the weekly newsletter with children’s voices included.
Thankyou - Perryn, Elisa and Nicole

Sports News
Swimming:
We are awaiting confirmation on whether Districts Swimming can go ahead. If it does, there will be strict protocols in place. Once we know this we will confirm our School Swimming Sports arrangements.
Basketball:
Teams have been chosen. Thank you to the people who indicated they could manage a team. If your help is required I will have contacted you already. It is really important that the protocols needed are followed strictly so in most cases we have stuck with the same managers as last year to make this easier. Hopefully by Term 4 it will be easier.
CLASSROOM ROUND UPS
Room 1 - Mrs Johnson
We look forward to another great week learning class routines and making new friends. Letterland work this week is i, n and m. A reading book to enjoy together and some simple letter /sound activities will be part of “homework” from today. We are learning to experiment with writing as we build and write an “ I am …” sentence and draw a picture to go with it. In Maths we are learning to make a simple bar graph to record our findings. As part of managing ourselves, I am encouraging children to unpack their school bags and book bags themselves and to sign in in the morning. We have started work on our Pepeha. Our goal is for the children to be able to introduce themselves in Te Reo Māori.
Room 2 – Mrs McGhie
Room 2 has continued to learn about each other last week as we gathered data about our favorite things and graphed this information. This was also our theme for our writing. I hope you enjoyed reading the poem of the week with your children over the weekend. This week the children will bring home homework sheets related to the book that they are reading with me in class. Have a great week and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Maria
Room 3 – Miss Swan
Room 3 have been busy learning about Daily 5 literacy activities and will begin using their new skills during reading rotations this week. We will have our homework books coming home alongside our reading books this week so please keep an eye out for those. We are becoming graph investigators and we can now use data we find and turn it into a bar graph! Have an awesome week! Please remember you can contact me via Seesaw and email mswan@tearohaprimary.school.nz
Room 4 - Mrs Willis and the Goldfields Team
Kia ora koutou! Welcome back to all our tamariki, whanau and Teacher Assistants whom are Ms Phillips, Whaea Aaliya and Mrs Ashby. We are one of Goldfields School Satellite classes. May 2022 be a prosperous and happy new year to all!
Room 5 - Miss Entwisle
Our first two weeks went by in a flash and we can’t believe it is Week 3 already! Miss Boyd will be in on Tuesday as Miss Entwisle will be busy with testing. In Mathematics we will be working on Statistics and learning about graphing and interpreting information. In Art we will be creating gorgeous portraits of ourselves. Our Spelling words this week are all about ad and ch. Copies of our spelling lists and class poem for the week can be found on Seesaw. Remember to keep bringing your swimming gear each day.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Miss Entwisle via the school office: 078848803; email: mentwisle@tearohaprimary.school.nz or through the Seesaw message function (once you have connected with it at home).
Room 6 – Mrs Bankier
Welcome to Week 3 in Room 6. This week we have our STAR (Reading) and PAT Maths testing on Monday and Tuesday. Unfortunately I am not in class on Wednesday (Course - ALIM), Thursday and Friday (I will be looking after my husband post surgery).
Mrs Bartram will be in on Wednesday and Mrs Gamble on Thursday and Friday.
We are learning to manage ourselves and our learning.
In Maths we are practising and learning strategies in addition. We have been learning about compound and complex sentences, which we will continue with the week.
Please remember that we swim everyday, we are practising for the School Swimming sports.
Mrs Trina Bankier kbankier@tearohaprimary.school.nz
Room 7 – Mrs Paul
Room 7 will start its testing this week. In order to get it done we do need everyone at school so here's hoping we all stay healthy. your children are such stars wearing their masks, and we continue to take regular mask breaks. We will start working on our Pepeha over the next few weeks so your help with this would be greatly appreciated. There will be a number of ways the children can do this and I will be encouraging them to do what works best. In maths we will continue to work on our number knowledge and addition skills. The children are becoming experts at challenging themselves in Daily 10. It is great to see them focussing on themselves and trying to be the best they can be, and not worrying about other people.
Room 8 – Mrs McKenzie
Kia ora koutou Room 8 whānau
Welcome to week 3 of 2022! I am thrilled to see the potential of the students so far and am excited to see what else they can do! We have established our daily routine of maths and exploring whole numbers, the students show eagerness in sharing their prior knowledge collaboratively and are understanding a range of strategies that help solve problems..
Literacy - we have been exploring Quick Writes as a way to increase our vocab and ideas. This week we move onto our shared class novel and will explore different strategies in oral language, reading and writing to help us understand different text..
Look out for those home messages on Seesaw as we will be sharing some of our work over the coming week.
Have a great week.
Mrs McKenzie
Room 9 – Whaea Armstrong and Mrs Hodgetts
What a fabulous two weeks we have had back at school! Now that we are getting back into the swing of school life, we are ready and eager to get our brains churning. This week we continue to establish our learning expectations and routines, along with some testing to see where our learning is at.
Literacy - This week we are working on what makes our writing go from good to great, looking closely at descriptive and figurative language. In reading, we continue to work on our reading comprehension skills through our school journals and our novel “Island” by Gordon Korman.
Mathematics - This week we will be diving into our mathematics learning by developing our knowledge around mental strategies for addition.
Art - This week we continue to get to know each other through visual presentation. We have proudly created both name art and self-portraits that represent who we are, and we will continue to express this in our art this week.
Keep your eyes peeled on Seesaw to see what we have created.
Swimming - We continue to work on our skills in the water, with the first couple of days having a special emphasis on water safety. Please remember to bring your togs daily and that if you cannot swim to bring a signed note from home. However, we do encourage you to make the most of our school pool while the weather is still good.
Homework - once again we encourage our tamariki to read 20 minutes each night, and to complete their weekly quiz as found in their home learning folders online. Remember that hard copies can also be found in the classroom.
Room 10 – Mrs B
Kia ora koutou - He rau ringa e oti ai. Many hands make light work.
This week, we continue to build our team through the use of taskboard activities that are designed to support students in getting to know each other. This will require some help from home as students learn about how they got their name and develop their movie / google slides presentation (will need some photos if possible!)
Seesaw - we nearly have all our Rm 10 families and whānau signed up which is awesome. There will be a few entries shared this week of our super cool artwork and completed taskboard activities. Be sure to check it out and leave a comment!
Swimming - please make sure your child has a note if they are unable to swim. We will be making use of the pool every day.
Hats - a number of students in Rm 10 need to have a school hat, especially as we love being able to do some of our learning outdoors. Students without a school hat will be directed to the shade during breaktimes.
Literacy - we are loving our class novel "2MUCH2DO" by Vince Ford and are exploring different comprehension strategies to show our understanding. We will also be competing Quick Writes this week.
Numeracy - we explore the value of large whole numbers to a million and beyond in a variety of ways this week - get your thinking caps on RM10!
Here is to another awesome week in Rm 10 - our first full week.
