For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - September 2018
The Principal's Corner
Why do Catholic schools exist? When you look at this from a student’s view, there are two clear goals: First, preparation for high school and college, and secondly, preparation for Heaven. While we hope that students realize these goals in this order, Heaven is ultimately the more important of the two. Catholic schools strive to put students firmly on the path to holiness that one day they may attain Heaven. Catholic schools introduce students to Jesus and invite them to form a relationship with Him so they may discern His call for their lives, strive for holiness, and attain Heaven.
In a recent conference of Catholic educators, Pope Francis offered three criteria in order for Catholic schools to be effective. Identity, quality, and care for the common good which, he said, are essential to the Catholic educator’s task. Schools need to be consistent and show continuity between their foundational mission and the Church’s mission of evangelization. By focusing on the quality of their education and the common good, educators can help all understand that we belong to one human family.
Pope Francis went on to say, “To fulfill our mission, therefore, we must lay its foundations in a way consistent with our Christian identity.” In this context, Our Lady Queen of Heaven School teaches students by forming their whole being: body, mind, and soul so they may fulfill their God-given potential to become the people God is calling them to be and in so doing, serve their neighbors, contribute to their communities, and find joy in their lives.
All of these are skills necessary for further education and success in employment, participation in a global economy, and contributing to one’s community. Every day, I am thankful for the community we have here at OLQH who are comprised of educators and parents committed to developing children who will be committed to their faith as future leaders of our community. What a gift!
Peace,
Trevor Donnelly

1st Grade - Communities!
First Grade has been busy reading! Blending words and writing sentences have been super great! We also discovered that our COMMUNITY is where we live, work, and play! We had so much fun constructing our OWN community!
1st & 2nd Grade Assessments
The first and second grade students recently completed the first round of 3-Minute Assessments. We administer this test in the fall, winter, and spring. The assessment tracks the student’s fluency (words correct per minute i.e. WCPM) and listening comprehension. This data is valuable for monitoring progress throughout the year as well as for grouping and identifying students who need reading intervention.
The fluency target range for the 2nd grade on the first round is 60-100 words per minute. The average score for our 2nd graders was 88 WCPM with 85% of our students falling within the target range.
The fluency target range on the first round for 1st graders is 10-40 words per minute. The average score for the 1st grade students was 17 WCPM with 50% of the first graders falling within the target range.Great job kids!
2nd Grade Accomplishments!

The Art World
Believe it or not, we already have a winner of Artsonia's Hall of Fame--Gabe Walker in Mrs. Posch's 2nd Grade Class. Congratulations, Gabe!! Remember to get in the Hall of Fame your child must have at least three pictures published, five members of their Fan Club, and five approved comments on their artwork. It's easy.
Both the Kindergarten and First Grade classes are entering the Americanism Art Contest sponsored by our Women's Veteran Organization. Kindergarten learned all about the American Flag and had to color it with crayons. The First Graders had to draw the American Flag (no small feat) and color it with crayons. The Veterans Organization will judge the pictures and select winners which would then go to state. Winners get monetary prizes. Good luck Kindergarten and First Grade!!
Second Graders are learning to draw a REAL tree--not a tongue depressor with fluff on top. They are doing a great job. They will add the environment and color with pencil colors. You are going to love them. Third Graders are learning how to properly draw an insect (or snail) and color it with pencil colors.
Fourth Graders are having a great time turning their names into an Alien from the Planet Zorn. The imaginations are kicking in nicely. They will outline with Sharpies and color with markers. They will be displayed in the Fine Arts Building hallway.
Seventh Grade Band/Chorus Art Students are making an optical illusion with rulers, pencils, and pencil colors. They really look nice. Eighth Grade Fine Arts Survey just finished study Illuminated Manuscripts and will begin to make an Illuminated page of their own. They are starting with their favorite Bible verse, then learning to draw Celtic Knots, and then learning to draw the Celtic Alphabet. They will be judged later by a team of judges and the winner's picture will be the cover for the school's Advent Card. They will be magnificent!
If you have not signed up for Artsonia (it's free) for each and every one of your children, please do so. I have way too many Kindergarten and First Grade Parents that have not signed up. Please do so as soon as possible. If you are having problems, email me bfoshee@olqhs.org and I will assist you.
Remember we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!

Spanish!
Already praying in Spanish! Students are practicing and know the Sign of the Cross and the Blessing in Spanish. Ask them to pray in Spanish at home before meals. Congratulations to Mrs. Piatt's (1st grade), Mrs. Barger's (2nd grade) and Mrs. Phelp's (4th grade) class for practicing their second language even when I am not there. Thank you Mrs. Posch's class (2nd grade) for incorporating Spanish vocabulary into their reading lessons. Spanish is all around us more and more now, help your student recognize the language in everyday situations. Hint: Home Depot aisles are the best! Kroger has a whole aisle dedicated to Hispanic cuisine and culture.
asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
