NEWS FROM THE NURSE!
My Plate and Your Preschooler
The U.S. Department of Agriculture introduced My Plate to replace the old food pyramid in June 2011. The symbol may have changed but the message has not. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low fat dairy products. The symbol changed in an effort to make it easier to understand what to serve. Half of your child’s plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, the other half with grains and lean proteins along with a side serving of low fat dairy. Half of the daily grains should be whole grains. You do not need to serve all groups at every meal but do serve a variety. The servings missed at meals can be served for snacks.
Getting your preschooler to eat healthy can be a challenge. Yet, the benefits of healthy eating easily outweigh the challenges you encounter teaching your child healthy eating habits.
One of the more prevalent problems related to poor nutrition habits in childhood is the alarming increase in childhood obesity as reported by the Center for Disease Control. Healthy eating can help prevent obesity and has also been linked to reducing the chances of getting certain types of cancer, Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and dementia.
View healthy eating as an adventure with many approaches. The challenge is finding the approach that works best for you and your kids. Make it fun! Let your child help in the kitchen. Allow them to pick a new fruit or vegetable to try. Explore foods from different cultures. Eating healthy snacks is important for a preschooler. They cannot consume all the nutrients that their body needs in three meals a day. Be creative, turn there snack into art; make a face out of different fruits and vegetables. Encourage water instead of sugary drinks. Save the sugar treats for special occasions; not a daily treat. Eat healthy meals together as a family since children learn by example. Help your child to become a healthy eater now and give them a great advantage in life. Check out the My Plate website, http://www.choosemyplate.gov/, it offers many ideas and recipes. Bon Appetite!
