NOTES FROM THE FIRST GRADE TEACHERS

Welcome! This is the first of many weekly newsletters to come this year. Please be sure to read through the newsletter each week for important dates, reminders, and to see what we are learning each week. We had an AMAZING first week of First Grade! We hope the kiddos had as much fun as we did.

We have decided for now that it would be easier if everyone sent a snack for their own child each day. We will have extra snacks on hand in case someone forgets to bring a snack.

We are looking forward to a great year with our new firsties!

READING

We will begin launching our Reader's Workshop this week! The students will learn the routines and components of the reader's workshop model. The students will identify the characteristics of reading stamina. They will learn the expectations for independent reading or Read to Self. They will begin to demonstrate reading stamina through independent reading. They will the learn the 3 ways to read a book and how to take care of our classroom books. We will also work on our "Turn and Talk" procedures.

PATHWAYS

Pathways is the reading program we use to teach students the five core components of the reading process. The five core components are: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This week our pathways lessons will focus on consonant review and building vowel town! We will also begin reviewing the sight words they learned in Kindergarten.

Math

Our first unit in Math focuses on reviewing skills learned in Kindergarten. We will establish routines and procedures for calendar time and our math class time. We will work on writing numbers, counting objects, representing numbers in a variety of ways, and composing and decomposing numbers up to 10 using drawings or equations.

Social Studies/Science/PBL (Project Based Learning)

We will continue to learn and practice classroom rules and procedures. We will review the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids. We will begin to introduce the students to Growth Mindset. We will provide more information about Growth Mindset at Curriculum Night! We believe in "The Power of YET!"
