NEWS FROM MRS. MANKIN
Dear Bulldog Families,
December typically brings with it, along with unpredictable Indiana weather, a fast-paced few weeks before winter break. As we have been “wrapping up” this last week of school, I wanted to reflect a little on a learning-filled first semester. We have grown as readers, applying new and previously learned strategies to both fiction and nonfiction texts, and we have been exposed to a variety of new books with participation in the Global Read Aloud. We have stretched ourselves as writers, writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. We have been solving all kinds of math problems and sharing our strategies with others…Science and social studies have “come alive” in a variety of formats as classes have participated in STEAM challenges, study of extreme weather, and butterfly life cycles. The implementation of Community Circles and continuance of our 2nd Step Social Skills Curriculum has enhanced both classroom and building culture.
Our Related Arts classes amplify student learning by expanding opportunities for a variety of learning styles. We are so fortunate to have five amazing classes to expose children to art, music, and movement. Global Studies and STEAM were added this year and have quickly become critical components of our learning environment. We will continue our Global Studies work second semester with a focus on Spanish. Mrs. Shelton, a previous 1st grade teacher at NBE, will join us and Mrs. Coffman will travel to Sand Creek. We are excited to continue this new part of our Global Studies journey. Thank you Mrs. Coffman for teaching us about other countries and cultures! STEAM has been a hands-on, exploratory class in which students have worked individually and collaboratively to learn and solve problems. We have been fortunate to have Mrs. Cater teaching this class; we wish her well as she begins a new endeavor outside of HSE second semester. We will be welcoming Mrs. Freije in January as the new STEAM teacher.
Whether you will be celebrating holidays or additional time with family, we wish you a joyful, safe, and relaxing winter break. We are excited to return refreshed and rejuvenated for another semester of learning and growing with your child. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education!

Personal Safety for Children - Week of January 13
The Indiana Center for PREVENTION of Youth Abuse and Suicide will be presenting to all NBE students during the week of January 13. As a community, we must think of childhood sexual abuse as a preventable disease. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, child advocates, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can proactively protect our children before abuse ever happens. Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting our school soon to participate in this collaborative effort. The Child Lures - Think first and stay safe curriculum will be presented to the students. Providing relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to families and children increases awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes.
For K-6 (elementary) the body safety program will cover:
· Using our brains to keep us safe
· Bullying
· Body safety and the idea “my body belongs to me.”
· Brainstorm trusted adults
· The difference between secrets and surprises
· Trusting our “guts” or innate feelings
· The idea that everyone is special
*****As a parent if you do not want your child to participate, please contact the school counselor (Mrs. Sherri Leiner sleiner@hse.k12.in.us) for the opt-out form.
