The Manning Weekly Newsletter
October 15, 2020
Manning Community,
I wanted to update you on Jeffco's new quarantine process. As you know, many things are changing and hopefully bringing us back to more normalcy. One such change is the district health department looking closely at our quarantining process. An email went out to families last Thursday, 10/8, from the district, with some updates to the process. I have included the link below for your review. This will hopefully help us avoid mass quarantines in the future. I appreciate all our students for their efforts to minimize their exposure by continuing to wear a mask and maintain social distance guidelines.

Also, I would like to invite each of you to our second Parent Partnership meeting of the year this upcoming Tuesday, 10/20 at 5:00 p.m. As a reminder, Parent Partnership is a group of parents that are a community sounding board to the principal in operational matters such as budget, facilities, unified improvement plan, and the overall student and family experience. I've included a Zoom link below for our meeting this upcoming Tuesday. Hope to see you all there!

Finally, I would like to leave you with a quote as we head into the long weekend. We all make a difference. The challenge is making a positive difference in the lives of everyone we meet, even when we are under stress and pressure. It's an important reminder for all of us, our kids included. So with that said, spend some time over the next day, week, month, paying it forward.

Semester 2 learning selection changes?
In order to accommodate the needs of our students, families may make a change to their learning model preference - remote-only or in-person/hybrid - during the open windows specified below.
Semester timeline to request change: November 9 - 20
Second semester begins January 6
Manning will send out and post our survey for families who wish to change their learning style choice on November 9. You will only need to fill out this survey if you intent to change from one to the other. As with the previous survey, there will be a deadline and this decision will hold for the semester.

The 1st Quarter Ends October 23. The overall average your child has will be the final grade and cannot be changed.
If your child has late or redo assignments they want graded, they must be done before Wednesday, October 21.
The 2nd quarter begins October 26. This is a fresh start and a chance to keep their “A” up to Winter Break and the end of the quarter.
A special message from Kari Gray, Manning's Social Emotional Learning Specialist:
Hello to the lovely Manning Mustangs,
I am looking for your input in creating lunch bunches. I've sent a form out to parents. We are focusing on 6th graders for now, and these will be held remotely. Depending on interest and availability for supervision, things could be expanded. Please use this form to provide your input.
Thank you!
Kari
Quarantine Process Updates: (direct from the district)
In collaboration with Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) and observing Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) updated guidelines, we are revising our quarantine process effective immediately. This will continue to ensure a comprehensive health and safety process while also potentially reducing the number of quarantined students and staff. The revisions modify the identification process for middle and high school students and staff enabling a more precise targeted identification process.
Updates include:
- Elementary schools will have minimal changes.
- Middle and High Schools will use Targeted Contact Identification which can be used in classrooms under the following conditions:
- when there is a documented seating chart,
- documented identified small group participants every day,
- desks separated and at least 6 feet apart,
- desks facing the same direction,
- and students are seated long enough to make seating charts applicable.
Schools will be implementing classroom modifications to ensure targeted contact identification.
How sick is too sick to stay home from school?
At Jeffco Public Schools, we follow the recommendations from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on when is too sick actually too sick to go to school, work, or child care.
During Colorado's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, children and staff who have been exposed to a positive case or who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 listed below, must follow the Guidance for Cases and Outbreaks in Child Care and Schools.
MAJOR SYMPTOMS of COVID-19
- Feeling feverish, having chills or temperature of 100.4° F or greater
- Loss of taste or smell
- New or unexplained persistent cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
MINOR SYMPTOMS of COVID-19
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Nausea, vomiting
- Diarrhea
There are five main reasons to keep sick children and adults at home:
1. Someone who the child lives with or the staff lives with (or has had close contact with) has been diagnosed with COVID-19, or has symptoms of COVID-19.
2. The child or staff member does not feel well enough to take part in usual activities. For example, a child is overly tired, fussy or will not stop crying.
3. A child needs more care than teachers and staff can give while still caring for the other children.
4. The symptom or illness is on this list, and staying home is required.
5. Someone who the child lives with or the staff lives with is being tested for COVID-19.
Remember, the best ways to stop the spread of infection is through good hand washing and staying home when sick.

Congratulations to our very own Ms. Mendez!! She is a finalist for a GRAMMY!
Semifinalists Announced By The Recording Academy & GRAMMY Museum
A total of 25 music teachers from 24 cities across 16 states, have been announced as semifinalists, selected from more than 1,989 initial nominations submitted from all 50 states!
The Music Educator Award recognizes current educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. The recipient will be recognized during GRAMMY Week 2021.
The award is open to current U.S. music teachers, and anyone can nominate a teacher — students, parents, friends, colleagues, community members, school deans, and administrators. Teachers are also able to nominate themselves, and nominated teachers are notified and invited to fill out an application.
Each year, one recipient is selected from 10 finalists and recognized for their remarkable impact on students' lives. They will receive a $10,000 honorarium and matching grant for their school’s music program. The nine additional finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium and matching grants. The remaining fifteen semifinalists will receive a $500 honorarium with matching school grants.
The matching grants provided to the schools are made possible by the generosity and support of the GRAMMY Museum’s Education Champion Ford Motor Company Fund. In addition, the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, NAMM Foundation, and National Education Association support this program through outreach to their constituencies.
The finalists will be announced in December, and nominations for the 2022 Music Educator Award are now open. To nominate a music educator, or to find more information, please visit www.grammymusicteacher.com.

Finding yourself having to micro manage your student completing their homework? While your student may need extra support in the homework arena, here are some ideas that may ease your stress: begin with a restorative and blame-free frame of mind, be transparent about how the process affects you, collaborate to create an agreed upon routine including, when possible, a homework station that is different that the school station, and finding agreed upon language that will help you check in on their homework status (e.g. “What are your priorities today?”). These ideas have been compiled from this article.

As your Social Emotional Learning Specialist I have many interests, one is around how connected our students are. I am collecting data to create a social network of Manning to measure and assess one aspect of the wellness of our community. This data would be collected three times through the year. There are only 2 prompts: 1) Name 0-5 students at Manning you consider a friend 2) List all the adults at Manning you trust. Only aggregate or de-identified data will be shared outside the mental health team. The closer to 100% of our student population we receive data from, the more comprehensive my supports and interventions can be. Of course, participation is only encouraged. This link will bring you to our Social Network form, please share the link with your student(s).
We are now collecting 6th grade student interest in lunch bunches. I will be collecting referrals from the 6th grade team as well and other referral sources, coordinating the data, and inviting students. Click here to express your interest
