Math Facts...Dedicate Time at Home to Memorize Facts
For students in first and second grade students should work on memorizing basic one digit addition and one or two digit subtraction. Examples: 5+2=7, 9-4=5, 8+5=13, 18-9=9, etc. These should be completely memorized with fluency by the middle of second grade.
Student in third grade begin really understanding what it means to multiply and divide. By mid-year students should have all multiplication facts through 12 memorized with fluency. By mid-year of fourth grade students should have all division facts memorized with fluency. Examples: 5x7=35, 42/7=6, 144/12=12.
For students beyond grade four, if your child is struggling with fact fluency, it is critical that you work on the facts at home.
If families spend about 5-10 minutes practicing facts at home and in the car, students should acquire mastery relatively quickly. It is important that this is done at home to support mastery.
Online Safety and Responsibility is Important
Teaching digital citizenship prepares students for staying safe and making good choices when online. At school we teach the children to respect and protect themselves online.
Keeping children safe and responsible online starts at home. Here is a great resource of topics to discuss at home. https://tinyurl.com/mr46cmv2
Please make sure that you are monitoring your child's use of social media on smart phones, tablets, etc.
