BMHS Weekly Update
December 16, 2019
Activity/Club Highlights: PRIDE
BMHS PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence) promotes leadership, diversity, and school spirit throughout the 2019-20 school year. This year’s PRIDE EXECUTIVES include: Seniors, Summer Husein, Yesenia Kinsey, Abby Lubowicki, Serena Ramsammy, DJ Stewart, and Tressa Valukievic. Also, we have Juniors, Anthony Comer, Joseph Matese.
PRIDE kicked off the school year by working collaboratively with National Honor Society and Avid on a “Hurricane Homeroom Challenge.” We collected needed items for the areas devastated by the fall hurricanes and donated to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank who works with Feed America in distribution of the goods. Also, in September PRIDE sponsored our first Mental Health Awareness event. The event consisted of pupil service, BMHS counselors, psychologists, and our new student family support service specialist providing awareness about mental health supports within the district. Also, BMHS students presented personal stories of mental health struggles and how they received help. This provided real, meaningful and hopeful information.
During the month of October PRIDE and SADD hosted founder and CEO Gabriella Kreuz from "Love Doesn't Shove". The presentation was about informing the students about healthy relationships.
November had PRIDE, RYP and Avid partnered for the “National Mix It Up Day.” Upperclassmen were paired with underclassmen for a day to experience the different academics classes and social groups. The day ended with a presentation on “diversity” by Terry Malone. Also, PRIDE led a "Thank the Veterans Letter Campaign" and helped in providing yard signs for BCSD veterans.
To conclude the semester, PRIDE hosted “Celebration Of Culture and Faith” in December. BMHS PRIDE Executives, students and staff presented on Christianity, Guyana/Hindu, Judaism, Palestine/Islam, Poland, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, and Lebanon. Afterwards, students and staff in attendance enjoyed various ethnic foods and desserts.
I know you’re thinking: WHAT’S NEXT? During second semester, PRIDE will be working with LINK to present “Challenge Day” (Cross the Line) to the Freshmen and Seniors at the end of the semester in January. This has always been one of the most meaningful events during which students learn to break down the barriers that divide, using what they learn to work on uniting as Titans. Also, PRIDE and SADD will be working together with the American Heart Association to promote a month of healthy heart awareness and education on vaping.
February will bring "Black History Month" which will have PRIDE, RYP and the Varsity Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams hosting “Cafe Harambee Celebrates the Harlem Renaissance".
In March, PRIDE will be presenting at the Diversity Center’s High School Conference at John Carroll University. Also, PRIDE will be hosting our "First Women's Forum" for Lady Titan Seniors only.
During April, Pride and Key Club will host Jane Lewins from AFSP and Elaine Myers from Lifeact to present at the annual "Into the Light" about suicide awareness, hope and help. BMHS Students will participate in the annual "Into the Light Walk" at the Cleveland Metro-parks on April 20, 2020..
Lastly, PRIDE, along with the Class Advisers, leaders, students from each class, and staff will be presenting the most spirited event of the year, “Clash of the Titans.” The class hallway competition begins Thursday, May 21st and the competition field events at Finnie will be on Friday, May 22nd . PRIDE will conclude the year with a Senior Salute to the Senior Executives.
Thank you for your time and support of PRIDE events throughout the year! As the PRIDE Adviser it has been a privilege and honor to work with such dedicated, passionate and hard working Executive Leaders who are about "Being the Change they Wish to see in the World"
