Building Resilience

Big picture

What is RESILIENCE?

The Marion Webster dictionary defines resilience as, “an ability to recover from, or adjust easily to adversity or change.” If you think about this from an athlete’s point of view, it’s the ability, for example, to run a marathon and be able to fully function the next day. Most likely muscles are stiff and sore, but the athlete is able to get back on their feet, work out the stiffness, and engage in their day.

Building personal resilience.

Why do we need it?

Resilience is what allows us to deal with life’s set-backs and challenges without falling apart. It’s about being adaptable or flexible. The American Psychological Association states that, “Resilience involves behaviors, thoughts and actions that anyone can learn and develop.” Yes, you read that correctly, the encouraging news is that we can learn and develop resilience.
