Message from the Principal
We have began our second semester this week! I cannot believe how fast our school year is going! Report cards for the first semester will be mailed home within the next week. The report cards show the progress students are making towards the standards that have been covered so far. Please connect with your classroom teachers if you have any questions about it.
We also want to make sure our students bring warm clothes to school. The weather has been colder than usual for this time of the year so please make sure they have warm shoes, coats, and gloves for recess time. Our family liaison, Liliana Olvera, can connect families with any resources needed. Please call our office if you need additional clothing for your students.
Please mark your calendar for the following school events:
March 7th - Concert/Curriculum Night for grades 3rd-6th
Parent Information
Safety Reminders for Staff, Students, and Parents. The end of 2018 brought several safety incidents to Hillsboro and Beaverton School Districts that involved social media threats. These types of “threats” are almost always found to have no credible basis; however, they are extremely disruptive and upsetting to students, staff, parents, and the broader community. The extent to which you can help reinforce safety messaging to your various stakeholder groups and ensure people know what to expect in a safety incident, how they will receive information, what types of information can be shared, etc. will help us avoid or at least lessen the impact of these events in the future.
Pick up-Please contact the office at least 30 minutes before dismissal time to arrange a pick up. Students are use to their daily routine and if they do not receive a pass they will go to their bus or walk home.
*Pick up/drop off area- Do not leave unattended vehicles parked in this area. This creates traffic and blocks crossing intersections, we want to have a smooth transition for our students and parents.
*Lunch- If you visit to have lunch with your student, you must report to the office first. You have to sign in our guest computer and wear a visitor pass at all times. You can sit with your student in our round table we have in our cafeteria.
*The office hours are 7:15- 3:15pm. Parents please take in mind that school doors open at 7:15am, you can drop off students at this time. Don't forget to remind students that the bell rings at 7:45am. After this time it's consider a tardy and students need to check in the office to get a stamp.
Parents:
Consider making a New Year’s resolution to put your best foot forward for safety!
This year, let’s make it our goal to ensure students get to and from school safely. If you are driving:
· Drive 20 MPH in school speed zones. When traveling at this lower speeds, vehicles can stop faster and in shorter distances. Also if a crash were to happen, research has shown that pedestrians have an increased chance of surviving a low speed crash.
Interesting fact: In a 20 MPH crash, a pedestrian has a 90% chance of surviving and not suffering a severe injury. This rate decreases to 60% if the crash occurs at 30 MPH.
· Driving slowly is especially important in school zones since young students may be unpredictable.
· Be aware and stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks. Remember that in Oregon, all intersections are legal crosswalks.
o Helpful tip: On roads where there are multiple lanes traveling in each direction or where there is a center turn lane, be alert for pedestrians when the driver in the adjacent lane stops. They may be stopping for a pedestrian who is not initially visible from your lane.
· Do not idle or park in the bike lane. This space needs to remain clear of cars to allow for bikes to travel safely and quickly through Hillsboro. Also, it is the law (ORS 811.550).
The Safe Routes to School Program looks forward to providing more safety tips to your community throughout 2019. Happy New Years! From the City of Hillsboro Safe Routes to School Program.
