Considerations for Rural Educators
I learned that to support 2E students as a rural educator you have to be willing to take on roles, be flexible with grouping students, and plan for differentiation.
In a rural school, we are not able to provide many of the opportunities that larger communities can. Our town is located 30 miles from the nearest anything, and those towns are not much bigger. It would be too time-consuming and costly to travel to or to have an expert come and help in the school with projects or enrichment clusters, for example. I learned that a teacher is willing to fill those roles and learn along with the students. I also learned that a teacher to be willing to take the time to find resources, whether it is online or in-person, to support the students. For example, you might not be able to find an engineer at a big company, but a farmer who has built a building or a barn can help.
