Our Classroom Community
Our goal at the beginning of the year is to create a classroom community in which students feel safe exploring and taking risks while learning. We’ve been working in partners, small groups and as a whole class to build our community. It’s important for students to feel accepted and valued because they each contribute to our classroom in a special way. We also have a “Morning Meeting” each day in which students greet each other, share personal experiences as “Reporters” and receive classroom jobs. These meetings allow us to practice respectful listening and speaking to the whole class as we learn all about each other
Here's what we're learning!
During these first few weeks of school, we have been reading books together, with partners and individually. Some of our favorites have been Chrysanthamum, Have you filled a bucket, and The Name Jar. The students are thinking, discussing and participating in activities to enhance understanding of poems and stories presented in these rotations. We are connecting these stories to Writer's Workshop where the focus is on Narrative Writing specially "small moments". As authors, we write stories about our personal experiences and things that are important to us. Students are learning to retell moments from their lives using transitions words, actions, thoughts, feelings, and creating endings to their stories. We have also been talking about things good writers do, such as: use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, names and I, punctuation at the end of sentences, and use our personal word wall and Quick-Word book to help us spell. In Math we have been reviewing daily routines such as calendar and weather. We have also been reviewing number sequences. At home you may want to ask your child to count off by 2s, 5s. or 10s starting at various numbers other than "0". They are expected to go into the hundreds on this as well! We used our IPADs to take the NWEA (MAP) test this week. The data will allow us to determine the specific learning needs of your child and adjust instruction accordingly. The IPADs have different Apps and we have started using them for a variety of academic purposes! We also started our first Science Unit on Ecosystems. Students are using the Scientific process to see whether seeds can grow into plants without different variables such as air, water, sun, and light. They have been recording some of their findings in the Book Creator app which they will later load onto SeeSaw. We will be using SeeSaw as a digital portfolio to see your child's work and growth. Finally, please check out our class website (under the Families Section on the Westbrook website (see link below) that I have created to view students’ pictures, resources, and newsletters. Have wonderful Weekend!
This year we are using Seesaw to share and communicate with families! Your child will post to Seesaw to share their learning. I'll also use Seesaw to send you messages and reminders. Seesaw is private; you'll only see posts created by your child.
