The Journey of Love

Hermia's PLaylist

Theme: Following Your Heart is a Journey of Obstacles, Courage, and Love

In A Midsummer's Night Dream, Hermia's intent is to marry her true love, Lysander. However, she encounters many obstacles such as her father's disapproval, Puck's magic causing Lysander to no longer love her, and Helena's jealousy. In the end, she triumphs and realizes her dream. William Shakespeare's message is that love is not something that will always come easily, but to believe in it and follow your heart. These songs represent Hermia's love, courage, and perseverance throughout the play, which are the traits that allow this theme to shine through.
Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)

Track #1: What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger) by Kelly Clarkson

This song reminds Hermia that by struggling through her argument with her dad, if she is successful in following her heart she will be stronger as a person for finding the courage to stand up to her dad and defy him, risking her own life since Athenian law would allow her father to kill her. Defiance is a word that can be used to describe Hermia at the beginning of the play. Hermia would direct this song towards herself, as a reminder that her courage makes her a stronger, more confident person.

I think that these lyrics are good examples of how this song corresponds with Hermia's actions.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

stand a little taller”

Christina Perri - A Thousand Years [Official Music Video]

Track #2: A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

This video represents Hermia recognizing her reason for standing up to her dad. As the lyrics below show, she has to find confidence and remember that she's doing this for Lysander and for her own happiness. Hermia could be mistaken for being young and foolish in love, but actually the whole thing is put in perspective by the fact that her father wants her killed (a standard punishment under Athenian law for disobeying one's father). She's been brought before Theseus because of her father's complaint, and under these circumstances, she's pretty bold to stand up for herself. This song represents her reason for doing this, her love for Lysander.

"Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave?
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?
But watching you stand alone,
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow."

Miley Cyrus - The Climb - Official Music Video (HQ)

Track #3: The Climb by Miley Cyrus

I think that this song represents Hermia running away with Lysander. She knows that she is taking a huge risk, but she is following her dream and her love. There are times she is shaken and worried, but she perseveres. This part of the theme is about a solution to one of the obstacles in the way of Hermia and Lysander's love.

“There's a voice inside my head saying

You'll never reach it

Every step I'm takin'

Every move I make

Feels lost with no direction,

My faith is shakin'

But I, I gotta keep tryin'

Gotta keep my head held high”

Forever and Always - Parachute

Track #4: Forever and Always by Parachute

This song represents Hermia and Lysander's intent to get married when they run away. This song represents a pledge of love, and I think that Hermia would listen to it to remind herself of Lysander when she's not with him. At this point in the play, Hermia and Lysander are still madly in love, and I think that this theme portrays this theme very well.

"I want you forever, forever and always
Through the good and the bad and the ugly
We'll grow old together
Forever and always"

Taylor Swift Breathe Lyrics

Track #5: Breathe by Taylor Swift

This song is about Lysander seeming to no longer love Hermia. This song is an accurate comparison because Hermia still has feelings for Lysander and can't understand why he doesn't love her anymore. Hermia would listen to this right after she found out that Lysander didn't want her anymore.

"I see your face in my mind as I drive away,
Cause none of us thought it was gonna end that way.
People are people, and sometimes we change our minds.
But it's killing me to see you go after all this time."

Owl City - Vanilla Twilight

Track #6: Vanilla Twilight by Owl City

This song is also about Hermia missing Lysander. The song, quite literally, has lyrics about lying awake and missing him. Hermia knows love sometimes seems doomed, even if it's not actually doomed. Consequently, Hermia holds onto her love no matter the circumstances or consequences. Even after Lysander has deserted her, Hermia's final thoughts before going to sleep in the forest are of Lysander, hoping that he'll come back. I think that this theme is shown well in the following lyrics:

"The stars lean down to kiss you
And I lie awake and miss you
Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere
'Cause I'll doze off safe and soundly
But I'll miss your arms around me"

Vanessa Hudgens - Come Back To Me

Track #7: Come Back to Me by Vanessa Hudgens

This song is about wanting to get back together, and that is how Hermia feels after Lysander announces that he no longer loves her. She continues to love him and want him. This is a classic example of, "the heart wants what the heart wants".

"Baby Come back to me
In my heart I still believe
We were meant to be…
Together so whatever it takes (Baby Come Back)
Baby come back to me"
Peaches & Herb - Reunited

Track #8: Reunited by Peaches

This song would be listened to right after Puck's magical mistake was corrected, and Hermia was once again loved by Lysander. I can imagine her listening to this while she is rejoicing that he is once again her perfect match. I think that this represents the theme because this is sort of the climax of the story, right before the happy ending.

"Reunited and it feels so good
Reunited 'cause we understood
There's one perfect fit
And, sugar, this one is it
We both are so excited 'cause we're reunited, hey, hey"
Sara Bareilles - I Choose You

Track #9: I Choose You by Sara Bareilles

This song is one that I think Hermia would listen to after she was given permission to finally marry Lysander . This song reaffirms her feeling for him by saying, "I choose you". This also shows that Hermia wholeheartedly understands that Lysander wasn't trying to dump her, but was under a spell.

"My whole heart
Will be yours forever
This is a beautiful start
To a lifelong love letter"

Bruno Mars - Marry you

Track #10: Marry You by Bruno Mars

This song represents Hermia finally marrying Lysander. Shakespeare's lesson with this ending is that if you persevere despite obstacles, as Hermia and Lysander did in the play, then true love will prevail, and anything can be achieved. This sort of reflects the human experience, but in real life, endings can be happy, but they aren't always perfect.
