We are Learning

This week, we discussing different types of figurative language. This week we focused on similes, metaphors, and idioms. We learned that by adding these to our writing it makes it so much more vivid. It helps bring life to our books. The class has had fun looking for them each day during our reading time. A few days we wrote them on post-it notes, then shared them out the following day. I am hopeful we'll see some of these transfer over into our writing!

Word Study

Today was our spelling test over the past 2 weeks words. Look for new word lists to come home Monday. Our next spelling test date will be Friday, March 8th!

This week we began working on our young author book rough drafts. Each student got to choose which book they'd like to use for their young author book. They could choose to use a story or book they have already written this year or they should choose to write a new story. Those who chose to write a new story have been spending much of this week busy writing. For those who're using a previously written book, they have had a few tasks to complete to their books. For example if they are writing a book that could include onomatopoeia, I challenged them to add it, or if there was a place they could add a simile or metaphor I challenged them to add it. If they are writing a nonfiction books I challenged them to add 2 new non fiction text features as well as 3 new facts to each section. Be sure to ask your child what book he/she chose!

This week in math we looked at various ways to find the area of complex figures. We also learned more about fractions. We have learned the top number of a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom number of a fraction is called the denominator. We learned that when the fraction has the same numerator and denominator it equals one whole. We also learned how to add and subtract fraction with like denominators. Next week we will look at equivalent fractions.
