Gwin Eagles S.O.A.R. April 24, 2020
Hello! Greetings From Gwin!
Please read the announcements shared below and feel free to contact us at 439-2600 if you have any questions or need clarification on the events and information shared in this edition of GES News.
Progress Reports and Grading for the 4th Nine Weeks
In the next several days, you will be receiving an email from your child's classroom teacher about the progress he/she has made thus far this nine weeks. Please know that our goal is to introduce concepts and standards to our students during this grading period and to support all of our students toward receiving passing grades. Teachers are more than willing to give additional needed support to students as needed.
The progress reports will indicate whether or not your child is "on track" toward mastery of standards taught in core academic subjects at this time. Students who have not been attempting any assignments or have not worked toward completion of assignments will most likely have an "incomplete" or "failing" grade. This does not mean that the student will fail for the year, but it does suggest that your student should seek guidance from his/her teacher about how to make more significant progress this grading period.
We are here to support your family during this challenging time for us all. Please be sure to take things one day at a time and let us know if we can be of assistance.

Gwin Student Insight Form for 2020-2021
The process for student class placement for the 2020-2021 academic year has begun at Gwin. Your child's teachers, the school counselor, and administrators will provide input in the decision for placement for your child for next school year. Your input is also very valuable to us.
We invite you to offer information using the form below to help with this process. Please note that this is not an opportunity to request a specific teacher or for specific classmates to be included in your child's class. We do, however, welcome you to share about positive or negative experiences in years past that may also assist our team in making the best choices possible to ensure that your child has a good year.
Please use the form linked below to provide feedback for our team if you choose. This is an optional task. This form is not required for our placement team to take your child's needs into special consideration, however, you are welcome to share your thoughts.
How Can I Support My Child If They Are Experiencing Anxiety During COVID-19?
Many causes or contributing factors can lead to anxiety and stress during COVID -19; social isolation, school work, uncertainty about the pandemic, etc. Here are some ways you can help:
“Knowledge is power.” Make sure you have the facts from trusted groups like the CDC.
Develop a routine that matches as close to what it was before we had to socially isolate.
Listen and check in frequently with your child.
Make sure you and your child practice self-care: get enough sleep, eat healthily, and exercise.
Make sure to stay virtually connected. This is good for kids and adults. Speak with friends, family, teachers, counselors, and co-workers.
Make plans for activities you can do together - watch a movie, go for a bicycle ride, go for a hike. Build activities into your weekly routine.
Teach coping skills - deep breathing, walking, journaling, reading, drawing, etc.
Be mindful of screen time. Too much information often causes anxiety and stress. Recognize when news or other media might be causing an increase in anxiety symptoms, and know that it is okay to unplug when needed
Focus on the positive.
Always reach out to your counselor if you need assistance. Counselors are still here and available to help students, parents, and families.
Added to and adapted from NAMI, Child Mind Institute, and the CDC
First Aid for Feelings
An additional resource for parents of elementary students is a free downloadable workbook from the Yale Child Study Center called First Aid for Feelings. This is a workbook to help kids cope during the Coronavirus Pandemic. The workbook in English and Spanish can be found here:
