The Eagle Review - Winter Edition
Breakfast with Santa
Every year the Eagleswood Township Committee provide a free breakfast with Santa event at our school. A group of dedicated volunteers bring us the holiday spirit! The children were delighted and everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast. Just look at these smiling faces!
Reindeer Games!
Eagleswood Elementary School partnered with Appel Farms to put on a holiday production. Students from grades PK- 6 put on a show that got everyone into the spirit of the season. A HUGE thank you to the PTA and the parents who put in so much time and effort to make the show a huge success!
Our students were able to show off their acting, singing and dancing talents! There were students who even starred in their own commercial.
This sparked the interest of our older students inspiring them to want to write, stage set, direct ad act in their own play. To welcome spring, our talented students will be writing their own play and performing it for the school and parents!
Thank you again to the PTA for all you do for our school!
Arts Infused Friday 1/26/18
The Life of a Snowflake
Students discussed what snow is and facts about snow. They read "Life Cycle of a Snowflake" and talked about how snowflakes form. Students then discussed how they would use that information to create their own snowflakes using marshmallows and toothpicks. They each created their own special snowflake.
The Three Little Pigs, An Architectural Adventure
Students used the engineering design process in groups to construct a house for their little pig that cannot be blown down by the big bad wolf.
Designing LEGO Cars
Students used LEGO bricks to design a car and raced their car down a ramp. Students measured the distance traveled on the first try. They redesigned their car for a second trial to see if they could get their car to travel farther. Students were engaged in the exploration of design and imaginative play.
"I Have a Dream"
Students learned and understood the effects that Dr. Martin Luther King's speech had on the American Civil Rights Movement. They watched Martin Luther King's speech, "I Have a Dream", and wrote down key words or phrases that they thought were important. Students then created a word cloud using the words and phrases.
Ribbon Dance
Heavy Hearts Challenge
Students were given an engineering challenge of how to place three different size hearts, each of various size and value, into one large area. The object was to get as many points as possible while keeping the hearts in the marked off boundaries.
Design a Snowflake
Students worked together to create a symmetrical snowflake using materials provided. They developed a simple sketch to help plan out their design and worked within a group to put their creative ideas together.
Snowflake Science
Students learned about different types of snowflakes. They had to complete a challenge and design two paper snowflakes, one that falls quickly and one that falls slowly. They tested these snowflakes and made modifications to improve their prototypes.
Arts Infused Friday 2/23/17
Story Telling with Puppets
Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade read and retold stories. Next the students prepared a puppet show for their classmates by creating characters, cutting them out and then gluing them to sticks. Finally, the class became the audience while groups of students performed their puppet show.
Winter Olympic Games: Snowboarding
Students learned about the history of snowboarding. In this activity, they had to design a snowboard and a snowboarder and successfully send it down a ramp. Students were to think about the weight of the snowboard and snowboarder while planning their construction in relation to how it will impact the speed.
Winter Olympics
Students were given a fun and creative learning experience and learned about the sporting events represented in the Winter Olympic Games. Emphasis was not placed on competition. Good sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation, creativity and having FUN were the main objectives.
Winter Games - Bobsledding
Students first watched videos on bobsledding in order to develop background knowledge on bobsled. They then constructed their own bobsleds using the knowledge of the effects of balance and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Once their bobsleds were complete, students tested them by racing against other classmates to see which one reached the bottom first.
Ski Slope Challenge
Students were given an engineering challenge of how to plan and design a statue skier for the winter games which can stand up on skis and be able to ski down a slope. They were given foil, craft sticks and tape in order to create the statue skier. Students had to design and measure their ski slopes, and then raced each other down the slopes.
Seeing Seeds
Groups of students received a variety of colorful fruit. The students then cut the fruit open and observed the insides with a hand lens. The students illustrated and labeled the fruit, then counted the seeds to compare the amounts of seeds in different kinds of fruits.
The Rebels: Tom and John
Using the book, The Rebels, John and Tom written by Barbara Kerley, students worked in groups to create a poem/skit to depict the personality traits and importance of the lives of either John Adams or Thomas Jefferson.
Awesome Adjectives
Students read Hairy, Scary, Ordinary What is an Adjective? and discussed different types of adjectives that are included in the story, and exactly what an adjective is. They then observed Van Gogh paintings and used adjectives to describe the textures, movement, and expression of the pictures. Students then colored and designed their own self portraits and chose 5 adjectives that describe themselves to put around their portraits.
CAP Program at Eagleswood
On the evening of January 11th, Barbara Gitelson from the Ocean County Child Assault Prevention organization, presented a 90 minute guide to parents on preventing child sexual abuse. Their goal is to empower children to be "Safe, Strong and Free"! Parents were encouraged to review and discuss with their children their rights to be safe strong and free and how to protect themselves from strangers. She encouraged parents to talk to their children about their "private parts and teach them their personal boundaries. Ms. Gitelson also came in to train the staff and did program presentations in the classrooms as well!
Preschool Parent Program
"I'm your little worry stone,
Please keep me close to you.
So when life gives you blues or troubles,
This is what you do
Wrap your hand around me,
Give me a rub and say
Be gone all worries and sadness
For today will be a wonderful day"
The Hour of Code
Our students participated in “The Hour of Code”. The Hour of Code is a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities for all age levels.
The students of Eagleswood are learning that programming a computer is like learning any other language in that the skill must be practiced and tested out. Just as languages open up the ability to communicate with worlds of people, programming gives children the ability to create technologies that impact those around them. With just a computer, kids can use their programming skills to build things that could change the world!
Shhh! You're the Mystery Reader in Mrs. Lee's first grade class!
Every week a student is chosen to be the Mystery Reader and read a story to the class. The "Secret Envelope" is put in one student's backpack on Monday. That student has all week to practice reading the book at home. On Friday the "Mystery Reader" is announced and he or she reads their book to the class! Each student can't wait until it is their turn!
5th & 6th Grade Drug Prevention Slogans in Health Class
"Falling Water" - Science Lab
Students completed a lab called “Falling Water”. They discovered that different heights created a different splash pattern, similar to a waterfall in real life. They witnessed how potential energy was converted into kinetic energy due to gravity.
"How Much Matter Do you Have?" - Science Lab
Students completed the lab titled, "How Much Matter Do You Have?". They measured two objects in as many ways as possible and investigated volume, weight, and length. After comparing their objects, they even got to use a triple beam balanced to measure their objects in grams.
2nd Grade Science Lab
2nd Grade was able to explore how plants depend on animals to spread pollen and help them survive. They observed the structure of pollen and how it is moved from plant to plant by playing a seed dispersal game. This game showed the three main ways seeds can disperse.
"Tick Tock" - Science Lab
3rd Grade was able to develop an understanding of regular patterns of motion and how future motion can be predicted from them. They planned and carried out an investigation to predict the motion of a pendulum and used this to discover patterns of change and how these can be used to make predictions. In the lab titled "Tick Tock", students measured the speed and time of two different sized washers.
