Reminders:
- Please make sure your child has completed their math assignment each day. Students usually get time in class to work on their assignment, if not it becomes homework
- Check out your child's planner to see what they are learning each day!
- Want to know how your child is doing at school? Look at the Pirate Privilege chart located at the front of their planner. This is where letters are taken for behavior, incomplete/late work, and tardiness.
- Try not to take things out of your child's trapper without them present. There have been a few incidents where a student needed something and it was no longer in their trapper.
What's Happening?
Math
If you feel your student is struggling on math concepts, or you wish for them to have extra practice, have them get on Prodigy. Log-in username and passwords were sent out last week to each student. If you are not familiar with Prodigy, it is an interactive game that most students enjoy to play that helps students practice math concepts! Click here to go to the website.
DO NOT FORGET - Students should be getting on Reflex Math at least 3 times a week until they achieve 100 percent fluency. Once they reach 100 percent fluency, they only have to get on once a week. Click here to go to the website.
ELA
We will be starting reading logs next week, where students will be asked to read 30 minutes a night at home. Please be sure your child is completing their 30 minutes of reading as it is very beneficial to their learning and growth! This is the only homework that will be given for ELA, unless students fail to complete their weekly responses to their reading in class.
In Reading, we are learning to make inferences as we read. This may be something you ask your child to do when they do their reading at home. Students are working with a reader's response journal in class, and the expectation is that they respond to their reading IN CLASS 3 times a week. If this is not being completed you may see their notebook come home over the weekend to be sure all work is caught up. They are given an ample amount of time to do this in class, and no one should need to be bringing this home as long as they are on task throughout the day.
In writing we are working with descriptive writing. This will be our main focus in writing for first quarter. Stay tuned for more exciting details regarding our first quarter writing pieces!
Science
Social Studies
In social studies we just wrapped up our unit on using map skills. The students have done a great job using cardinal & intermediate direction, using a compass, recognizing the equator and prime meridian, using a map key and scale, and locating places using latitude and longitude. Hopefully you have seen your child creating a map at home. This project is their assessment, and will be the final grade for our unit on Map skills.
Next we will be moving on to geography. Starting next week students will begin learning the 7 continents, and we will then move in to states and capitals. We will learn all 50 states, their location, and capital. The assessments on the states will be broken down by region, so it will not be expected for students to know all 50 states at one time. It will however require some studying outside of school, so please check in with your child to be sure they are staying on top of it. We will have a celebration for master geographers at the end of the unit!
