News From Marion Jordan Elementary
1st-6th Last Day of School - 5/27/21 Dismissal at 11:35AM
Information from Mrs. Grosch
I was once told the only constant is change. I was too young to fully understand the weight of those words, yet have experienced change often enough to now know its truth. I am writing to inform you of two significant changes that will occur related to our school.
For the first time since its placement at Marion Jordan School, we are unable to accommodate the number of sections slated for the Structure for Indpendence Program (SIP) next year. The program is expanding to include nine elementay aged classrooms and we simply don't have the capacity in our footprint to host all nine on site. Therefore, the decision has been made to move three SIP classrooms to another D15 school; six will remain at MJ. Three classroom teachers, a social worker, an occupational therapist, and a speech/ language pathologist, along with a handful of program assistants, will be moving to Jane Addams school to teach the program at a second district site. The SIP Program was housed at Jane Addams many years ago and the remaining staff are excited to welcome it back. In addition to the staff, we are also saying good bye to a number of students who will be transitioning as well. Change is rarely easy to navigate, yet it helps us to know so many of our family members, staff and students, will remain together at Jane Addams.
Mrs. Shostachuk and I have enjoyed serving the Marion Jordan Community as an administrative team for the past nine school years. I am pleased to share that Mrs. Shostachuk has been named the Principal of Central Road Elementary School for the 2021-22 school year. We wish her all of the best in her new endeavor! We are actively engaged in the process of filling Mrs. Shostachuk's vacancy and will share the news as soon as it is available. Goodbye and Good Luck, Mrs. S!

Registration and Residency for 2021-22 School Year
Online student registration for the 2021-22 school year is now open. If you have not already started this process for your student(s), please visit our registration page to start this process.
Registration is the first step in getting ready for the up-coming school year. After you register your child online you need to:
Pay student fees. Our student fee webpage outlines the District’s student fee structure and the three ways fees can be paid.
If you have a student that is starting Kindergarten, entering fourth grade, or entering 7th grade, you are required to prove residency in District 15. Our residency webpage outlines the documents you will need to provide to prove residency. All D15 schools’ front offices will be open until 7pm on June 8 and 14 for anyone needing assistance to register their child online or prove residency.
All three steps of the enrollment process must be completed prior to the start of the school year. Families that do not register and, when required, prove residency will not receive information about their school’s school open house event, teacher assignment, class schedule, or bus route until registration is complete.

What's happening at MJ?
Beyond Just Boundaries
1. Focus on Near- Neighborhood Schools
2. Establish a Cohesive Educational Pathway for Students
3. Balance Enrollment at All Schools
4. Offer Full-Day Kindergarten for All
5. Implement a Middle School (6-8) Model
6. Eliminate the Bilingual Overlay
7. Ensure Equitable Access to Programs and Services
8. Uilize Facilities More Efficiently
9. Repair and Restore Our School Buildings.
Should District 15 and its governing BOE members choose to move forward with any or all of these key goals, the targeted implementation would be for the 2023-24 school year. Some of the impacts directly notable to Marion Jordan would be the potential change from a K-6 to a K-5 building, an all day Kindergarten offering, our self-contained gifted classrooms would be moved to a centrally located school with other Academically Gifted and Talented classrooms from around the district, and a change from our assigned junior high of Walter R Sundling Junior High to a newly created Thomas Jefferson Middle School. You are welcome and encouraged to be part of the dialogue on these important matters by attending BOE meetings in which additional information will be shared. The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for June 9, 2021. Here is an overview of the Beyond Just Boundaries Initiative.

Summer Strategies
Happy (almost) summer Marion Jordan families! With summer closing in, I would like to acknowledge the hard work that parents have done this year, whether your child is virtual or in-person. What a challenge of a year, and the resiliency and tenacity of kids and parents has been evident.
As we head into the summer, I would like to highlight that while exciting, for some of our students summer can bring feelings of unease. They may have loved their teacher, classroom, friends, the routine of the day, or all of these, and summer can bring some worries. Child Mind InstituteⓇ has a great article linked here with strategies for to use to help kids in the summer. The article is more focused on children with a diagnosis, but can apply to any child feeling unease. Some ideas include:
maintaining a schedule and structure throughout the summer
keeping behavioral expectations in place
getting exercise
Another summer strategy is to continue to talk to your child about their feelings to help identify any feelings of anxiety or concern heading into or throughout the summer. One tool we use at Marion Jordan that will continue to be used / highlighted even more next year is the Zones of RegulationⓇ. Currently the tool is hanging in our hallway to help students identify their feelings and strategies to use. The Zones of RegulationⓇ provides a tool for students to identify their feelings and energy in their body, and then choose a strategy to modify their energy level if needed. There are 4 colors:
Blue - low energy level (e.g. tired, sad, sick)
Green - good amount of energy (e.g. calm, ok, fine, happy, etc)
Yellow - a little too much energy (e.g. excited, frustrated, silly, worried, etc)
Red - too much energy (e.g. furious, angry, terrified, etc)
Feelings and tools are linked to the colors as a structure to identify feelings and strategies to calm. I encourage you to explore this tool over the summer if your child is having trouble regulating their emotions. More information can be found here.
If you are in need of resources or have questions about anything going on with your child in the social emotional area, please contact me at kowalskl@ccsd15.net or 847-963-5550.
Thanks!
