December 8, 2018 ~ 2nd Sundy of Advent
Carols at 6:30PM, Goodie Bags and Blessing of the Brains at Mass Tonight at 7:00PM!
Greetings Everyone,
As we enter finals week, I know how busy and overwhelming this time of the semester can be. Advent offers us an opportunity to take a step out of the busyness and stress that surrounds us and find grounding by gaining a larger perspective.
On this Second Sunday of Advent, I would like to share with you some reflections on Advent from Pope Francis. He explained that during Advent, “Jesus exhorts us to pay attention and to watch, to be ready to welcome him at the moment of his return.” The person who pays attention, he continued, is the one who, “in the noise of the world, does not let him or herself be overwhelmed by distraction or superficiality, but lives in a full and conscious way, with a concern directed above all to others.”
With this attitude, Pope Francis notes, “we become aware of the tears and needs of others and the attentive person tries to counter the indifference and cruelty in the world and rejoices in the treasures of beauty that also exist in it." Pope Francis underlined that the vigilant person is the one that welcomes the invitation to watch, and is not overwhelmed by the weariness of discouragement, a lack of hope or disappointment.
"Being alert and vigilant", Pope Francis states there are preconditions that help us to stop "wandering away from the ways of the Lord. These are the conditions that allow God to break into our existence, in order to restore meaning and value to it full of goodness and tenderness.”
May we pray for each other as we continue our Advent journey of being alert and vigilant and together may we find light in the darkness. Join us tonight at 6:30PM as our choir will sing some traditional Christmas hymns before our 7:00PM Mass as we celebrate this 2nd Sunday of Advent!
Advent Peace,
~ Jamie
PS: We will offer a "Blessing of the Brains" at the end of Mass and the Sisters of St. Joseph will be here with final week goodie bags for each of you!
