This Week in Kindergarten

This was a short week due to the Monday holiday, but we packed in plenty of learning. The students reading and writing stamina is increasing daily and, what's really exciting, is they are noticing. In science, we have started talking about characteristics that distinguish living things from non-living things. This kind of inquiry will help us transition to learning about the plant Life Cycle. It wouldn't be a complete week without lots and lots of singing. We love singing the familiar songs about colors and the calendar.

Important Safety Lesson

The men and women from Firehouse #2 in Coppell visited Lakeside this week with their annual safety lesson. The firefighters entertained us while teaching about bike helmet safety, the importance of wearing a life jacket on the water, reasons and how to call 9-1-1- and the safest way to escape your house if you smell smoke. The children were spellbound and completely engaged. We might be biased, but we think the best and most caring community workers are in 75019.

Important Dates

  • October 20- Arboretum Field Trip
  • October 21 - Report Cards go home (first 9 weeks)
  • October 21- Kindergarten Lock-In
  • October 28 - Red Ribbon Walk
  • October 31- Scarecrow Day (dress like a scarecrow for the 8:00AM parade)

Field Trip Reminders

Next Thursday, Kindergarten will be taking our very first field trip as we visit the Dallas Arboretum. Thank you to all who signed up to join us in the fun. Please remember to:

  • talk to your child about the importance of staying with an adult (chaperone or teacher)
  • have you child wear their red Lakeside shirt (or any other red shirt), weather appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking shoes
  • pack your child a completely "throw away" lunch, and a disposable water bottle

SeeSaw Online Portfolio

We are so excited to share this new communication tool with you. Each week your child will upload a few things to share with you via iPad. We are eager to begin sharing many more school moments through this online tool. Be sure you go to your child's teacher's link (shared via email) to continue to be notified when your child uploads work. We are also optimistic your child's photography skills will improve :)

Kindergarten Lock-In

The annual Kindergarten Lock-In is Friday, October 21. Permission forms came home this week. Please sign and return the permission slip along with $20 if your child plans to attend. You will drop off and pick up in the cafeteria, where we’ll be spending time dancing, reading and talking about the special evening. When everyone arrives, we will start the celebration with a warm cookie and milk because, after all, who wouldn't want a yummy treat, especially when wearing pajamas? The Lock-In is a long standing tradition in Kindergarten that children talk about for years. Don't miss the fun which lasts from 6:00 - 9:00PM. Please note: The deadline for returning forms and money is Mon., October 17.

Thank You

Thank you to the many parent volunteers we had this week. Learning Buddy in the hallway, Teacher Helper at home or school, Lunch Helper in the cafeteria and Mystery Reader are all vital to the complete learning experience. We appreciate you and your talents and the children really notice when you are here.

Mystery Reader

We had another great mystery reader this week! Thanks for all of those who have volunteered to read with us.

Parent/Student Fall Conferences

If you were out of town on Conference Day, please make sure you are in touch with your child's teacher to arrange a fall conference. We know you will be amazed at seeing the goals your child has written and the growth in their writing and learning journals.
