Spring Parent Teacher Conferences
We will be doing school wide Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. Each teacher has set conference times on Monday April 15-Thursday April 18. Please contact your child's teacher to schedule one if you have not done so. We want to share with you the successes we are seeing in your child's education. All conferences are 15 -20 minutes in length.
Here are some ideas to discuss with your child's teacher:
1. What do you see as my child’s strengths?
2.What do you think are the academic challenges for my child?
3. What would you do if my child were struggling academically with something?
4.How is my child doing socially?
5. How do you support kids in their social development? For example, how do you address challenges that happen at recess? or lunch time?
6. Is my child on grade level for reading? What about math, science and writing?
7. Can we talk more about your homework policy and how my child is doing with homework?
8. What can I do at home to support what you’re doing in the classroom?
We hope that you have signed up. We love sharing the outstanding things your child has done this year so far.

What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts/Reading/Writing: We are beginning our final unit on Expository Texts/Research. This will be our final project and students will be choosing an animal to research. They will be expected to write a brief paper and create a diorama of the animal's habitat. In this unit for we will be reviewing questioning, main idea, and details. Students will continue to ask relevant questions, seek clarification, locate facts and details, and retell important facts. They will be practice using text features (e.g. table of contents, illustrations, etc.) to locate specific information in the text.
Social Studies-We will be integrating Social Studies Skills into our research project in Reader's and Writer's workshops. Students will be working to gather information about a topic using a variety of sources. Students will be expected to communicate information in oral, written, and visual forms.
Spelling/Words Their Way:
We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words for List 29 are because, far, found, slow, wash . We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words.
No Spelling Sorts This Week
Math:We will be starting our new unit on Data Analysis. This unit is about data—the facts or information we collect about people and things in our world. Students will be sorting objects and information, posing questions, collecting data, and making representations of the data they collect.
Science: We are beginning a new unit on Life Cycles. This unit focuses on students comparing ways that young animals resemble their parents as well as observing and recording life cycles of animals. Students will use physical properties to describe details of animals and the changes that are part of their life cycles. We will be introducing three life cycles: chicken, frog, and fish. In kindergarten, the plant’s simple life cycle was taught, so first graders should have some knowledge of a cycle pattern.

Yes, the whole day will be outside. There are bugs-mosquitoes and ticks that enjoy living hosts. If you feel the need to have our child with sprayed with insect repellent or sunblock -you will have to do so before you send them to school. Teachers are NOT allowed to apply either bug spray or sunblock to your child. You can go to big box stores and get bug bands instead of sprays. Please if you do so, place around your child's ankle over the socks. If it is on their wrists they more likely to play or chew on it.
Yes, there are bathrooms there and they do have running portable water. We will make sure that students have taken care of personal business before heading out on the trails. We prefer if the classes stay together as a group. Students will not be able to leave the group at any time without an adult. They maybe told no they can't go to the bathroom right now and they may have to wait.
We will have learning goals and short lessons to complete during the field trip. Sadly enough it is not a picnic or blind romp through the woods. Chaperones maybe asked to carry lesson bag and/or lead some scripted lessons on the following topics: Animal Tracks,Beavers,Forest Floor Critters,Interesting Insects,Not Natural Objects Hike, Sorting Soil, Spider Web, Trees are Plants, River Model/Watershed, and Woods Walk.
The main idea of our trip is to show children how we impact the environment and how we can be good stewards of the planet we live on. We leave only footprints and take only memories.
