September Monthly Activity Calendar

Click the link below to access and print the SEPTEMBER calendar. As a family try to do as many of the boxes as you can during the entire month of September!

Pedestrian Safety

Torey J. families are reminded for the safety of their children to please utilize sidewalks at all times when escorting their child to and from school. Parent/guardian supervision when crossing roadways is also essential. It is important to note that Glenwild Circle and the BOE parking lot are active roadways. We continue to see students and families walking across parking lots during drop-off and dismissal. Parents/guardians are asked to communicate with caretakers who assist with student arrival and dismissal that the use of the sidewalk along the fence should be utilized to walk toward Glenwild Road. Obeying all crossing guard directions is an important aspect of pedestrian safety. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring the safety of our students and families.

News from Mrs. Bletcher in the Counseling Corner

I am pleased to share the many leadership opportunities that are available to students this year. Fourth graders who are interested in serving the TJS community will be introduced to the AAA Safety Patrol Program. Interested students can sign-up for positions around our school to help manage flow of traffic and potential safety hazards.

Sign-ups for our 5th Grade Peer Leadership program will be forthcoming. The Peer Leadership team participates in a variety of school-wide activities and is an integral part of the TJS school community. The 5th Grade Team and I encourage ALL 5th graders to participate. Applications will be sent home mid-September.

Later this year, all students, grades K-3 will have the opportunity to participate in Peer Mentoring. I will also be offering a variety of small social-skills lunch groups. Groups are formed as needed.

Attention parents!! I am on the lookout for students who demonstrate good character and leadership skills that would like to participate in social groups. Group time will take place during your child’s classroom Intervention Block and will not conflict with any new academic instruction. If you are interested in signing your child up, please complete the form below. Opportunities to participate may be offered in a variety of grade levels and are based on student needs. Thank you for your consideration and please let me know if you have any questions.

Renaissance Star Testing

Our first window of Star administration is occurring during the month of September. The Star assessments are diagnostic assessments designed to provide educators and parents with important information about a student's progress. Students in grades 1-5 take the Star reading and/or early literacy assessment as well as the Star mathematics assessment benchmarked for their specific grade. To read general information about the Star assessments, parents are encouraged to visit their family resources page.

Kindergarten teachers administer the Star CBMs (Curriculum Based Measures) in both reading and mathematics. The Fall kindergarten reading assessments assess a student's understanding of letters and their sounds, basic phonological awareness, and early decoding. The kindergarten math assessments include recognizing numerals and their value. Often times the CBMs may be administered in other grade levels, on an as-needed individual basis. For more information regarding the Star CBMs, please click here.

Madison Diversity and Cultural Celebration

The Madison and Chatham Diversity and Cultural Fair was held on Saturday, September 9, in front of Hartley Dodge Hall. Principal Ms. Garcia and the other district administrators were in attendance to share information about district diversity and cultural initiatives. Talented musical artists performed during the day. It was a fantastic event!
