Cause of the Disorder
Fragile X Syndrome is caused by a change in a gene called FMR1.

How is the disorder diagnosed?
Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited form of mental retardation currently known. A doctor with perform a DNA analysis to find out if they have Fragile X Syndrome.
Also a blood sample can determine fragile x syndrome

This will be something that children will have for their rest of there lives. They will have speech and language difficulties, behavior issues, sensory-motor and learning disabilities.

DNA analysis is the method of choice one Is testing specifically for Fragile X Syndrome and associated trinucleotide repeat expansion in the FMR1 gene.
If the diagnosis of the affected relative was based on previous cytogenetic testing for Fragile X Syndrome, at least one affected realative should have DNA testing.
can it be diagnosed prenatal?
Prenatal test can diagnose fragile x syndrome by testing amniotic fluid and getting sample cells from the placenta. This can be very risky and very dangerous so some mothers don't get tested.

about 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females have fragile X syndrome.
