It has been great seeing how well everyone has settled back into the term. Our tamariki have quickly delved back into their learning, and there is a great positive buzz around the school. There is a particular focus on maths this week, as it is NZ Maths Week. There is lots coming up to talk about in this edition of our newsletter.
Learning Conferences for Year 2 - 6
Learning Conferences for Year 2 - 6 will be happening on Tuesday 23rd August from 1.00 pm - 6.40 pm and on Wednesday 24th August from 3.00 pm - 6.20 pm. The conferences are 20 minutes long to allow for time for learners to also share work they are proud of. The conferences will be led by our learners with the support of the teachers.
If you can arrange it, it would be great if children could be picked up at 12.30 pm on Tuesday 23rd August. As teachers will all be involved in conferences, children who remain at school will be supervised in the hall by the leadership team and learning assistants for the afternoon. School will finish at the normal time of 3 pm on Wednesday 24th August.
Please follow this link www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the following booking code 37jd6. More information about the format of our Learner-Led Conferences is below.
A survey will be sent out via Hero next week to ask for information about who is able to collect their children at 12.30pm on Tuesday 23rd August.
*Please note for Year 0/1 students - Kākano Team run a different schedule, due to the catch-ups that parents and teachers have around things like 5 Year Check Data. Kakāno Teachers will be in touch with families to book their own times throughout the rest of the year. Also, Year 1 classes will finish at the normal time of 3 pm on Tuesday 23rd August, but parents who have older siblings are welcome to pick their children up earlier if needed.
Teacher Only Day - Friday 2nd September - School is closed for instruction
Our last Teacher Only Day for 2022 is taking place on Friday 2nd of September. On this day, our staff will be involved in professional development based on our local curriculum and also further learning about the implementation of the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum.
Kelly Club will operate on this day if you need supervision for your child/ren.
Learning Story Changes from Year 3 - 6
This term, our older learners (Year 3 - 6) will have the opportunity to write their own learning story posts as a way of promoting student agency. This will tie into the learning conferences, where they will lead the conversation around their learning. The focus of the learning story posts will be: What they are really proud of, any barriers that they have had to overcome, as well as DNA and Values they have shown. We are excited to see what they choose to share with you. Please do take the time to read these learning stories with your child/ren and celebrate their progress and achievement. Leaving a comment is a huge motivator for our kids and connects you to the learning that is happening. I know our kids value your comments and praise.
Mud Run
The excitement is building for our Chelsea School Mud Run this Friday, 12th August. The action kicks off at school around 4 pm with lots of slipping and sliding around the mud course. Parents are welcome, in fact, encouraged to join in the messy action. Children under the age of 5 are also more than welcome to run but must be accompanied by an adult.
Bring OLD clothes that can get REALLY MUDDY!
The PTA will be selling hot food and have a bar open for refreshments.
We look forward to seeing you there. Further details will be sent out later via Hero.
Board Elections
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents below for putting themselves forward for our upcoming Board elections. All are remarkable candidates who could potentially bring an amazing and unique skill set to our school board.
Simon Keepa
Katie LeVert
Rowan Marshall
Ian Till
Paul Wynyard
If we have a current email address for you, then you will receive an email in the next week with voting papers and information about each candidate. If not, you will receive papers in the post. Voting Day closes on Wednesday, September 7th, at 12noon. The three top candidates will be announced soon after that, and we wish them all the best of luck. This is your opportunity to have your say about who represents you, our parent community, on the board of trustees. Please get behind these people and vote.
Staffing Updates
Sadly, we are announcing the resignation of Su Saga from Chelsea Primary School. Su has taught at Chelsea for six years and has been a valued member of both the Kākano and Pakiaka teams. She will be missed but has decided that after years of bringing up children, university study and then full-time teaching, she needed to step back and take a break to pursue some of her other passions, such as painting and creating incredible recipes. We wish her all the very best.
A big welcome to Pravina Patel and Marlece Jensen, who will be joining our teaching team at Chelsea. Pravina will open a roll growth class from Monday 29th August, while Marlece will step into Pakiaka Hub 1 as Katie Pine goes on Maternity Leave. Pravina has a background in teaching reception in the UK and has recently managed a Home-Based Childcare Programme. Marlece has been teaching in an Early Childhood Centre on the shore. Both are incredibly passionate about teaching collaboratively and play-based learning. We are very excited to have them join us.
NED Show
Our virtual live NED show last Thursday was terrific. I have heard lots of great talk about these positive growth mindsets that fit well with our school values and DNA throughout our school. Friday was a mega Yoyo sale day, and sales have continued to roll in. The last day for sales will be Friday at 3:30 pm. We still have plenty of classic and some super varieties available. An order has been placed for the Specialty yoyos. If you are still wishing to purchase one of these, preorder payment can be made at the office, and they will be distributed once they arrive.
DNA and Values Awards Week 2 Term 3
Congratulations to our learners who have been recognised for their outstanding work in showing our DNA and values.
This term is a time of real traction in embedding these values. We are starting to hear our learners talking about the different values and what they mean.
Y1/2 Winter Netball team
The girls in this team have loved it. They've really grown as a team, learning the game and showing great teamwork. They are excited for the next season in October. Spring netball details will come out late August.
