Good To Know

Lab School Outreach

Last week 42 Kindergarten through 8th grade teachers attended a workshop at our school on teaching with primary sources. Primary sources are the raw materials of history – original documents and objects that were created at the time under study. Primary sources engage students, allow them to develop critical thinking skills, and provide them with opportunities to inquire and construct knowledge.

This workshop is the result of a collaboration among the UCLA Lab School, the Cotsen Foundation for the Art of Teaching, and the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program of the Library of Congress. Many of our demonstration teachers have attended TPS training at the Library of Congress. And across our school, teachers are working to incorporate more primary sources into inquiry curriculum and to share our practice with others.

Workshop participants observed classrooms, where they saw students using primary sources to discover more about their own world and the past. Whether looking at a photograph of Ruby Bridges surrounded by federal marshals, watching film of the first flight at Kitty Hawk, or interpreting letters written by Rosa Parks, students studied a document’s author, situated it in time and place, and carefully considered its meaning. Through such classroom observation, discussion, and training, workshop participants learned how to guide their students in these habits of historians, including sourcing, contextualizing, and close reading.

Want to know more about primary sources? The Library of Congress has more than 34 million digitized primary sources available online. Check them out at www.loc.gov
