Summer Symposium Workshop by The Reading League FREE for OCLI Educators

Elevate. Unite. Achieve. That is the theme for The Reading League's Summer Symposium on July 30th. Five one hour sessions begin at 9:15 a.m. Sessions align with the science of reading and will address ways to provide continuity of instruction online.

Dignity for All Students Act: (Dignity Act Coordinators and/or their Designees)/DASA Coordinator Training

This training will review the DASA regulations and updates; Review the roles and responsibilities of Dignity Act Coordinators; Share an overview of complaint process flow charts; Provide samples of DASA forms and investigation techniques; and provide an overview of best practices related to school-wide strategies for improved climate and culture. NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE 6hr REQUIRED TRAINING FOR CERTIFICATION. This training will be delivered in two - three hour sessions via Zoom. Participants will be emailed a link to the email address associated with their MLP account the morning of the training. No cost for employees of district which subscribe to the Oswego BOCES School Improvement Co-Ser. Tuition is $75.00 for all other attendees. WRITE Center Summer Learning Series for Secondary Teachers- FREE

WRITE Center is a national center based at the University of California, Irvine. The center is committed to sharing evidence-based practices for teaching source-based argument writing in secondary classrooms. Their summer learning series event is scheduled virtually in July and is free. Fill out the google form to get the live links prior to the event. Session topics include remote learning (Dr. Troy Hicks), narrative writing (Kelly Gallagher), poetry writing (Carol Jago), and Designing Academic Writing Assignments for ALL Learners (Jim Burke). Whether we go back to school with traditional instruction or remote learning or a combination of both, this session demonstrates techniques to help students understand the poet’s craft and develop intellectual stamina and fluency, skills they need more than ever for online and offline learning.

EduHam at Home Program- FREE for Kids & Families

Hamilton Education Program (EduHam), has served more than 160,000 students across the country since 2016. Through EduHam, students study primary source documents from the Founding Era, learn how Lin-Manuel Miranda used such documents to create the musical Hamilton, and finally create their own original performance pieces based on the same material.

EduHam at Home provides a family version of EduHam that can be accomplished outside of a school setting. It will continue to be available through August 2020.

Book Study: The Inner Work of Racial Justice: Healing Ourselves and Transforming Our Communities Through Mindfulness

Monday, July 20th, 9am

This book profoundly shows that in order to have the difficult conversations required for working toward racial justice, inner work is essential. Through the practice of embodied mindfulness--paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations in an open, nonjudgmental way--we increase our emotional resilience, recognize our own biases, and become less reactive when triggered. Join this four meeting book study to engage in discourse to move ourselves and our communities towards equity. We will hold our 4 core meetings at Onondaga Parkway. An informational meeting to address book distribution and materials needed for each meeting will be held on July 20th, 9:00 am via Zoom.

SEL Leaders Network Meeting

Tuesday, July 21st, 9-11am

This is an online event.

The mindset and skills of SEL are needed now more than ever as we navigate our current world in our own lives and as we educate and support our students, colleagues and community. This group continues to learn and grow in our efforts to foster SEL and mindfulness practices. We will work together to support re-entry with SEL as a focus and the ongoing development of SEL in our schools. These two summer meetings (August 18th @ 1:00 PM - meeting #2) will lay the groundwork for our ongoing work into the school year. Meeting dates for the school year are TBD.

Re-entry conversations have been at the top of everyone's mind since we initially went home. Conversations with students about what they experienced, how they are coping, and what we all can do to build our emotional resilience will be a crucial first step for anyone in education. Together, we will draw connection from our emotional resilience to what gaps students will have in developing coping, advocating, and essentially, resilience skills of their own. We will explore strategies and resources related to their experiences from the pandemic to the racial justice protests to foster a culturally responsive environment.

Cultivating a Mindfulness Practice Through Writing and Meditation

Friday, July 31st, 9am

Onondaga Lake Parkway

Summer is the perfect time to nourish and develop new habits. Together we will meet over a series of days at Onondaga Parkway (for better social distancing) to enrich our personal mindfulness practice. We will spend time writing, engaging in collaborative discourse, and ending with a guided meditation. We will have a mandatory information zoom meeting to further layout the logistics and session requirements. Your hours for this series will be accumulative based on how many sessions you attend. Each session will be 1.5 hours. The Zoom meeting will be July 31, 2020 at 9:00am-10:00am. The link for this meeting will be emailed 30 minutes prior to start time.

Resilience Retreat For Educators

"Taking care of yourself," writes the American Psychological Association, "helps to keep your mind and body primed to deal with situations that require resilience." Yet we often undervalue the importance of self care. Now more than ever, cultivating habits and rituals that nurture our resilience are necessary for our own well-being and the well-being of our communities. This half day educator retreat will offer opportunities to safely connect with a community of educators and to practice habits of resilience and self care. We will gather at Mexico Point Park - bring a chair, a snack, sunscreen and a journal! More information to come as the event nears

Leveraging the Power of SEL for Re-entry

Decades of research inform us of the power social emotional learning has positive student outcomes in academics, emotional intelligence, and long-term life achievements. While much uncertainty surrounds how and when school will reopen,we know that social and emotional learning (SEL) will be critical to re-engaging students, supporting adults, rebuilding relationships, and creating a foundation for academic learning, (CASEL 2020). This unprecedented shift to a new type of learning experience may have a lasting and profound impact on young people's academic, social, emotional, and life outcomes, (CASEL 2020). Together at this half day session, we will provide guidance on leading critical conversation necessary for staff and students upon re-entry and explore actionable recommendations from CASEL to support your reentry plan.
