Literacy Updates - November 2023
This year we are using new resources in English Language Arts. First, second, and third grades are using Open Court, while fourth grade is using Wonders. We continue to be excited about the resources available to us. Foundational literacy skills are a strong part of Open Court. It is exciting to see our students continuing to learn and grow in their knowledge of how letters make sounds, and how letters combine to make other sounds, all of which helps support our beginning readers. We’ve also been enjoying the stories and articles used in Open Court and Wonders.
Additionally, our students in first, second, and third grades are participating in a daily intervention time. Students have been placed into groups based upon the strengths and needs identified in our literacy screeners and any diagnostic assessments we’ve used. Teachers are spending about a half hour each day with these intervention groups. This additional time provides an opportunity to work on skills in phonemic awareness (identifying the sounds in words), phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and more. Students move to their intervention groups for the half hour just before lunch/recess each day. Teachers will be giving quick checks to monitor students’ progress in their literacy skills. Our intervention time, combined with our new ELA resources, is supporting our students’ continued growth toward becoming strong readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.
Attendance Update Letters
This year, we are looking to communicate with parents about school attendance in a different way. Parents will be receiving letters with updated attendance information in November. These letters will be provided about every two months. What's different about this communication is that it reflects the rate and percentage a child is in school. Rather than stating that your child has been absent a number of days, this letter reflects the rate students are attending school. This may be a small difference but we hope that parents begin to see attendance in a new way. Our hope is that all families will aim to have student at school at least 90% of the school year, but aiming for 95% would be even better. Families have direct control of raising the rate of their child's school attendance. Let us know what you think about this report.
School Fee Information
*Students who qualify for free and reduced lunches pay either half of the school fee (reduced) or no school fees (free). Contact Judy Johnsen, our Food Service Director, if this applies to your family.

Holiday Parties
Holiday parties are right around the corner and we are excited to use volunteers to host holiday parties at Norton Elementary School! Holiday parties provide students with an opportunity to have social interactions with their peers and celebrate throughout the year. Please follow the guidelines below to help us ensure a safe, fun event.
Each classroom will be assigned a head room parent. Head room parents will assign volunteers to one of the three school parties.
All families will have the opportunity to communicate with the room parent of any interest in volunteering for a party.
Our intention is that anyone interested in volunteering will have the opportunity to attend one party.
Only volunteers that have been signed up in advance will be allowed to attend a party.
No other guests will be permitted to attend parties (other than assigned volunteers).
