Welcome to Jessica, our new Pine Co-Teacher

We have a new face at Compass! Jessica Hollins will be joining us on Tuesday in the Pine Class. She will be a third co-teacher in the class this week and will then take over for Anna while she goes on parental leave for the remainder of the school year. Please help is in welcoming Jessica into our community. Please see below for Jessica's bio.

Jessica Hollins, Pine Co-Teacher (2nd Grade)

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Jessica has always been a risk taker. She was a member of the first graduating class at the Queens School of Inquiry, an early college school associated with Queens College, and member of the first class of a semester-long science and leadership school for 10th grade girls, located on the coast of Maine.

Jessica is a recent graduate of Syracuse University’s Inclusive Elementary and Special Education teacher preparation program. Although Jessica loved her teaching experiences in Central New York, she seized the opportunity to participate in the Bridge to the City program for her student teaching, working in both East Harlem and Brooklyn.

Through all of her experiences, she’s realized that she learns best through discovery and risk-taking, and wants to help children realize the benefits of taking their own risks and exploring possibilities. She looks forward to taking her first step in her career path by joining the Compass community.

Community Supported Agriculture is coming to Compass

Please see the info below about a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program coming to our community. Compass will be the pick up site for people in the community to pick up a weekly share of fresh and local produce. Please see the info below to sign up to be part of this CSA.

The CSA is online and ready for sign-ups!

Check out the link here (summer, fall, and half veg shares)

There are also additional share options tab for shares of dairy, protein (including eggs), mushrooms, flowers, and more. There still may be a few more options to come, but there’s already a robust selection so please take a look. This year, we’re going to do a la carte week by week featuring a seasonal or special product each week.

We are planning to have a CSA Kick Off event in the coming weeks. Please keep an eye out for this event.

Summer CSA runs twenty weeks from May 31 to Oct 11

Fall is Oct 18- Nov 22.

Half shares are full shares delivered every other week.

Working with Tuesday Deliveries again for the city.

We’re hoping to get people to sign up by May1 to give us time to prepare. The earlier the better in terms of supporting us at the beginning of the season when we have little or no other source of income.

4:00PM-6:00PM on Tuesdays at Compass

If it doesn’t work for the budget to pay all at once, members can pay in two chunks by check or paypal. Please email us for details. We’re also looking into accepting SNAP (food stamps) for the CSA.

Healthy School Fund/Student Activity Fee for February

Thank you to the families who have already contributed to our Healthy School Fund (formerly called the Student Activity Fee). Please see the info below.

The cost of our snack service along with a laundry service for our reusable rags and towels, and biannual lice checks is approximately $15-$20 a month per child. We kindly ask that you contribute to our Healthy School Fund/Student Activity Fund on a monthly or yearly basis. Please contribute what you can. If you are unable to contribute at this time, please let us know and we will support you. Your child will not be excluded. If you are able to sponsor another child for a month or the entire school year, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How to Contribute to the Healthy School Fund

Electronic Way to Send Money: Thanks to a recommendation from two parents, we have found a free and easy way to transfer money from one account to another. We want to make it easy for you to make monthly payments for snacks, future t-shirt purchases, and whatever other costs that may come up. The application is similar to Paypal, only free and easier to use. It is called Square Cash (click on the left side of the webpage for a short video on how it works and enter your cell phone on the right to get a text giving you $1 and a link to get started). After you get the text, all you need to do is enter your debit card information, download the app and type your email address. You are now ready to make and receive payments. To send Compass money, press "Send", select an amount and send the money to Todd's email address ( "Cash" also allows you to receive money from others as well. It is an easy for you to pay a babysitter or for a friend to pay you back some money they owe you.

If you would like to know how you can set up a recurring, monthly payment from your Citibank or Chase account, email Todd.

Non-electronic way to contribute to our Healthy School Fund: If you are not able to use Square Cash or are not comfortable using an electronic system, please send cash or a check (Made to Compass Charter School) in an envelope with your child's name and Healthy School Fund on the front.

One last note:

When using Square Cash or a check, please write "Healthy School Fund" in the memo for our record keeping purposes.

Thank you!
