SMS High School Soccer Team Highlights of the Week
By Phil Leggiere
The Saint Michael Saints High School Soccer team was back in action this week with two games, one home and one on the road.
On Tuesday, October 22nd the Saints hosted Eagle Hill School at SIT field. Despite some fine defensive efforts, offensive goals proved elusive for the Saints in a disappointing 5- 0 loss.
The Saints fared far better on Thursday, October 24th against the White Oak School, scoring a decisive 5- 2 victory in perhaps their finest effort of the season.
After giving up two early goals to White Oak, the Saints took command twenty minutes into the game when Stephen Borst took the ball down field for a goal. Shortly thereafter, Jason Borst took a corner kick which Ezra Christie tipped in for a goal, tying up the game. Goals by Jason Borst and Ezra Christie then put the Saints out in the lead, and a final tap-in goal by Christie with 20 seconds left in the game closed out a stellar effort. With the win, the Saints closed the regular season, their first as a member of the River Valley Athletic League, with a record of two wins, six losses, and one tie.
On Monday of next week, the Saints will meet White Oak again at SIT field for the semifinals of the Harvest Cup. A win Monday would advance the Saints to the finals, either at Charlemont, Massachusetts or Dublin, NH. All are encouraged to attend!
