Newsletter Week 3 Term 2

Sacred Heart School Christchurch - 20 May 2022

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Nau mai haere mai. Talofa lava, Malo e lei lei, Jou sahn, Aubowan, Chao, Hola, Fakalofa atu, Kumusta, Namaste, Ni Hao,

As we head towards Week 4 of the term we notice that the weather is changing quickly. There have been a few really chilly mornings and the first real frosts have arrived. It has made for some stunning days. With this change we do still need to keep the classrooms well ventilated so please make sure children come to school with an extra layer of clothing.

Earlier this week we finished with the Life Education mobile classroom. Children thoroughly enjoyed the interactiveness of the lessons which is helped by Harold the Giraffe, a long standing mascot of the programme. The lessons taught have been around helping children feel empowered about how to look after their own wellbeing.

Next week we will farewell Fr Phil with a whole school mass on Friday. Fr Phil will be heading to Dublin in Ireland to study. We congratulate him on his new appointment but at the same time recognise that he will be missed as a member of the Sacred Heart Community as a Board of Trustees member and a delight to have around the school. You are all welcome to come and help us farewell Fr Phil at 9.00 am Mass next Friday in the Church.

Have a great weekend.

Sport

This week after school basketball competitions have begun. Congratulations to the year 5 and 6 team who had a successful first outing beating West Spreydon 22-6. The team showed great teamwork and all gave their best effort.

Good luck to the Year 7-8 team that play their first game on Friday.

On Tuesday 31st of May three students will compete in the South West Zone Cross Country. Good luck to Donald, Dominic and Charlize. We also have some of the Canterbury Rams basketball team coming on this day to play some games and show us some skills.

Religious Education

Last Friday the tamariki from Muirwai and Aumoana attended Mass at 9.00am. The focus of the gospel reading was Jesus telling the disciples He is “The Way, the Truth and the Life”. Tamariki from these classes created pictures that they showed to the parishioners.

The tamariki from Teretere and Paretai (Mrs Thomson’s and Mrs Munro’s classes) will be going to Mass this Friday at 9am. Jesus tells us in the gospel reading on Friday that: My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

You are more than welcome to attend Mass which the children participate in with the reading, prayers of the faithful and the Offertory.

Faith Facts

Quotes from various sources on current topics.

“We are constantly reminded that we are not the authors of our own lives, but that the world is in God’s hands and we place our hope and trust in that first. All other parts of our lives flow from that.”

(Archbishop Paul Martin, Extract from Inform, Issue 131- Lent 2022)

Liturgical Year

The Blessed Virgin Mary is a beautiful, beloved, essential and pervasive figure in Christian life and in the Church’s calendar. She has been since the early days of the Church. Her feasts are as varied as the cultures of the world, with each having special traditions, customs, and habits of piety. Tuesday 24th May is the feast day of Our Lady Help of Christians. We observe it here in Aotearoa as a memorial. It dates back to the sixteenth century, which was not a peaceful time in Europe. In 1571, Catholics throughout the continent joined in praying the rosary in hopes of prevailing over military forces that had long sought to expand into Europe. These prayers were answered at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571, which is now the feast for Our Lady of the Rosary.

First Reconciliation/Communion Programme 2022

We continue to pray for the children preparing for their first communion, the next step in their journey of faith. We congratulate those who have just recently made their sacraments of first reconciliation.

Internet Safety

We are increasingly hearing about inappropriate chat online using Messenger. It is recommended that children under the age of 13 should not have access to this App. An alternative is Messenger Kids which is a free video calling and messaging app for smartphones and tablets. Parents can manage their child’s contact list and kids can enjoy fun features like filters, stickers and games. Read more about the app now.
