SHARK SHOUTOUTS
- The Distance Learning Seminar classes want to send a HUGE Shark Shout Out to Staff Sergeant Davis of the U.S. Marines for the wonderful, engaging, and informative zoom meeting that teachers and students had with him this week. Staff Sergeant Davis thoughtfully answered student-generated questions about racial, gender, and LGBTQ equities in the Marine Corp. Students asked blunt questions, and SSgt Davis answered them authentically and enthusiastically. We'd like to thank him and the Hyannis Marine Corp office for such a terrific meeting! -Ms. Lisa Forte-Doyle & Distance Learning Seminar classes
- A shout out to Ms. Forte-Doyle who coordinated a wonderful presentation by US Marine Staff Sergeant Davis on life and social equity in the military. He gave the remote seminar students some great information and eloquently handled some really challenging questions by our students! Thank you Ms Doyle for including all voices and perspectives in our curriculum! -Mr. George Sowpel
- A shout out to our nursing staff and others who gave of their precious time and worked so hard over vacation on COVID surveys, data analysis, research and support to keep us all safer! -Mr. George Sowpel
- A shout out to Mr. Houston whose tireless commitment and devotion to promoting the importance of freedom and democracy we saw played out in front of our eyes this week. It is a reminder of how the lessons he and our history/civics teachers provide, are so essential and valuable to us. -Mr. George Sowpel

MRHS students sponsor legislation to name Rt 137 bridge
As a result of the work of Monomoy High School Civics students, the Massachusetts Legislature enacted bill H4761 on December 29. The bill will name the Rt 137 bridge over Rt 6 as The Hidden Wounds Memorial Bridge. Gov. Baker signed the bill on January 6.
This effort started a year ago when the Grade 8 Blue Team D-block Civics class chose veterans issues as their topic for Project Citizen. Project Citizen is a program where each Civics class takes on an issue, researches it, develops a class policy, and tries to get the policy enacted. The class met with Rob Mador of Bridges for the Fallen, a local organization that has worked to honor veterans all over the country. The class chose to pursue the naming of the bridge over 137 in Harwich as their class policy. Their goal was to honor not a specific veteran but all those veterans who have come home and suffered from PTSD, TBI, and other lingering effects of their service, many tragically succumbing to these impacts. After many drafts and discussions with several local veterans, the class proposed "The Hidden Wounds Memorial Bridge" as the bridge name and the text of the bill as submitted - see https://malegislature.gov/bills/191/h4761. The class felt that this would be a meaningful way to acknowledge the sacrifice and suffering of the many veterans whose injuries are not apparent.
The completion and presentation of our project was reshaped by the shift to remote learning last March, but the class was able to complete the academic part of the project in June, culminating in a virtual presentation to a set of judges.
Now that the governor has signed the bill, the students will work with Mr. Mador, our legislators, and town officials to plan a naming ceremony.

Girls basketball team's act of kindness
The week before Christmas the girls basketball team found out about a Barnstable student who was pretty badly hurt in a car accident while looking at lights with his family. The team, led by Captains Leah Nash and Maggie Dever, collected money and bought both birthday, as his birthday was around the same time, and Christmas gifts for this young boy, Hunter Bradford. Maggie and Leah then visited his house and delivered the gifts on behalf of the girls basketball team. Both Hunter and his family are forever grateful and would like the team to be recognized. This is a perfect example of how selfless and giving our student athletes are. Well done Girls Basketball! Thank you for leading by example.
