WINKLER WEEKLY
Friday, December 18th
WINKLER FAMILIES,
As we are entering the final days of 2020 we want to say thank you, to you, our families! It has been unprecedented last 18 weeks and we couldn't have done this without you. We have seen many highs and lows that we will never forget and we know it has not been easy. Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to adapt and adjust through this pandemic. Your students have done an amazing job and we look forward to 2021!
We hope you have a safe and healthy Winter Break!
With sincere thanks,
Joel
A Neighborly Invitation
A Neighborly Invitation
May we who are merely inconvenienced, remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have low risk factors, remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home, remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our children, remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips, remember those who have no safe place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market, remember those who have no margin at all.
May we who settled in for a quarantine at home, remember those who have no home.
As fear grips our country, let us choose love.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us find ways to be the loving embrace to our neighbors.

Chromebook Care
We've noticed that many students' computers are not looking in the best of shape. Maybe with a few reminders for students, we can have them in better shape:
1. Don't eat near your Chromebook. There have been many Chromebooks brought in with food on them or crushed into the crevices. Remind students to keep them clean.
2. Shut them down! Help students shut down their computers so they can be updated.
3. Clean them! This would be a great thing to do during the break!
One of our district librarians sees a lot of Chromebooks throughout the week, here are some problems she's seen:
They shouldn’t pull the frame off
They shouldn’t pick the keys off
They shouldn’t draw, paint, put nail polish, stickers on them, and they shouldn’t etch into them with sharp objects
They shouldn’t carry them open, on top of their heads, or on a big stack of books
When the Chromebook is in a backpack they shouldn’t throw the backpack
They shouldn’t drive robots on them
They shouldn’t run with them
They shouldn’t slam them on desks or on walls
They shouldn’t leave them on the floor

EXPLORE MORE WINTER HOLIDAYS
Las Posadas is an important Mexican tradition during the holidays–complete with prayer, music, food, and piñatas. They commemorate Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn by forming a procession to that evening’s location and symbolically asking for shelter. When the owner of the home finally lets everyone in, they celebrate! Feliz Navidad (Merry Christmas), from Mexico! Check out this fun tradition!
Kwanzaa is a week long celebration held in the United States to honor universal African heritage and culture. People light a kinara (candle holder with seven candles) and give each other gifts. It takes place from December 26 to January 1 every year. It was created by Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated in 1966 - 1967. Non-African Americans also celebrate Kwanzaa. The holiday greeting is "Joyous Kwanzaa". Learn more about the celebration here.
Winter Solstice occurs On December 21st. Here in the northern hemisphere, we experience the shortest day of the year and inevitably the darkest day of the year. After the winter solstice, we start to get back our sunlight little by little until we make it to the summer solstice. This celebration goes ages and ages back, but one of the main reasons for the winter solstice celebration is to celebrate what will be the return of light after the darkest day. Now I think that’s something to celebrate too!
Chinese New Year, also referred to as Lunar New Year, is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar. The holiday is a two-week festival filled with reunions among family and friends, an abundance of delicious food, and wishes for a new year filled with prosperity, joy, and good fortune. ATTENDANCE BOUNDARIES
In Fall 2021, BASD will open its new middle school for grades 6-8. The district will also shift to five elementary schools serving 4K - grade 5 and the Montessori program will all be at Dyer. A committee of BASD parents studied district information to present a plan to the school board. The school board approved the committee's recommendation.
Read more about the process and view a map with the new attendance boundaries on this Attendance Boundary website. Elementary families will receive communication about what school their student/s will attend in early 2021. This is an exciting step that lessens the number of school transitions, creates space at the schools that were overcrowded, brings the Montessori program into one location, and helps to balance the district's enrollment across five schools.
