Testing Tips for Parents
Third through fifth-grade students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment from May 2-19, 2023. Then, in early Fall, the state will make your child’s score report available, including the scores for all the tests your child takes this spring. When combined with other measures such as grades, classwork, and teacher observations, these test scores give families and teachers a complete picture of the student’s learning.
We want your child to do their best on important tests, and you can help. Here are a few suggestions on ways to support your child during test time:
- Make sure your child is in attendance and on time on test days. Attendance is essential every school day, especially on test days when students can “show what they know.” After the test, let your child know that you appreciate that he did his best. Your encouragement will help your child gain confidence and encourage their best work.
- Keep to your routine. Experts say that dramatic shifts from a child’s routine can hurt performance.
- Help your child prepare for testing with a good night’s sleep, a nutritious breakfast, and a positive attitude.
- Encourage your child to do her best. Encouraging words and a positive attitude about your child’s test performance will go a long way toward calming test jitters. If you are anxious about your child’s performance, your child may think they are incapable or unprepared to do well.
- Review the testing schedule for your child’s grade below. On testing days, only a small amount of time— ranging from as little as one hour up to two hours— is spent testing on a given day.

Are You Motivating Your Child to Learn?
You’ve heard the saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” The same is true of kids and learning. But parents can nurture their children’s desire to learn. Are you inspiring a love of learning in your child?
Answer yes or no to each question below:
___1. Do you foster independence? Avoid doing tasks for your elementary schooler that your child is capable of doing.
___2. Do you do some quiet work of your own nearby while your child is doing schoolwork?
___3. Do you help your child see how today's learning will be useful in the future?
___4. Do you encourage your child to set goals? Do you talk about both short-term and long-term goals, and help your child plan the steps to meet them?
___5. Do you ask your child to think about what led to a good or disappointing grade? Discuss what your child did right or how to improve next time.
How well are you doing?
More yes answers mean you are encouraging your child to value learning. For each no, try that idea from the quiz.
