What We're Learning
Math - Unit 5 - The students have been working on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. I think they are doing great on the adding of fractions and mixed numbers! Subtracting mixed numbers WITH regrouping can be challenging, so any extra practice would be beneficial. We are moving into the spiral part of our unit, focusing on creating and analyzing line plots along with discussing angles and rotations. The class will be taking the paper/pencil unit 5 math test on or near February 3rd. As always a study guide will go home prior to the test, so be on the look out. The Study Island computer test will be given after the paper/pencil test.
Writing -Our current unit of study is Feature Articles. Students in both classes have picked a historical topic. Then we worked hard to develop a big question that will drive their research. Students are now doing research on their topic. I have shown them how to take notes and they are busy gathering their information.
Science - Students have moved from magnetism to electricity. We have enjoyed looking at lightbulbs through our incredible, new microscopes and trying to make a lightbulb light using only a D Cell, 1 wire, and a bulb. Their excitement as they made this discovery was contagious!!! Next week, we'll move on to circuits.
Social Studies - Mini Society wrapped up today!! Students did a great job creating businesses and learned a lot about what sells well and what doesn't. We will wrap up the quarter with the basics of economics.
ASK YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT........
Writing - What is their topic and big question for their feature article? How is research going? Ask them about commas!!
Math - Have them show you how to add or subtract mixed numbers.
