In our world, "taking a selfie" is a daily occurrence! We all do it! Then, we often post to social media what we are wearing, doing, eating, or thinking, for everyone to see! It's easy for kids to understand the "selfie" -- and it's human nature to want to tell our side of the story.
What's NOT so natural is: understanding another person's side of the story!
The ability to understand what another is feeling, to put oneself "into another's shoes" and see from another's perspective...this is EMPATHY.
Some people are naturally empathetic; others have a hard time looking through another's eyes. No matter how God has made us, Empathy is a skill that can be taught, learned, and practiced!
When we ask our kids, "How do you think the other person feels?" we help them understand a different point of view. The "others" can be characters in a book, movie, or TV show, OR real people they know or see. Here is a link to a site with just a few examples of good books to get the conversation started with children.

Little kids often have Big Feelings! Even very young children can start to understand how another feels. Here is a fun Sesame Street video which helps explain Empathy.

At Good Shepherd, we seek to understand children, AND help them to understand, respect, and EMPATHIZE with each other! THANK YOU for letting us be your partner as your child grows up to be the person God has created them to be!
Blessings,
Mrs JoEllen Hoffmann

Bendiciones
