9th grade Writing Field Test 12/12/19
On Thursday, December 12th, all 9th grade students will take the ELA Writing Field Test. The purpose of the ELA Writing Field Test is to assess newly-developed writing prompts, which may be used on future operational assessments. Student scores will not be reported for this field test; however, participation in the field test is an opportunity for your student to become familiar with the format of the writing component of the operational FSA ELA assessment that he or she will take in Spring 2020. In the 120-minute session, students will read selected texts and write a response to a prompt. Your student will receive a planning sheet, on which to plan his or her writing, but the official writing response will be recorded via the online test delivery system.
If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Mr. Koebe. For more information about the FSA program, please visit the FSA Portal at www.FSAssessments.org. Thank you for supporting your student and encouraging him or her to do his or her best during this test administration.
Best,
Nicholas Koebe

Science Fair Weekly Update
Science Fair Week 10 Update:
Continue researching, experimenting and gathering data. Complete as many trials as possible. In one replication you will have many trials, repetitions, and attempts. Try to aim for 30! (Surveys will have 50+ and computer program-based ones will have 100+). One replication should be completed before Thanksgiving break, another during/after Thanksgiving break. Remember to research any questions you might have relating to your experiment. The more knowledgeable you have about your project the better. YOU ARE THE EXPERT on your topic!
At this time all students should have submitted research plans with all the needed forms. Most students have received approval from their teacher to experiment. If you have not received approval, please resubmit your research plan for final approval.
Data notebook reminders. As you collect information in your data notebook/logbook please remember to data and number each page. Remember to always use pen. Never pencil. Do not erase. Do not remove pages. Mistakes should be crossed out with a simple X. The research journal is a diary. It starts with a detailed table of contents. It will have the many parts to the research plan with the page numbered at the bottom. After the plan has been written the daily logs can be placed inside. The research journal logbook will have previous ideas, sketches, contact logs, data, and even pictures of the project progression.
Do you have questions? What were some of the errors? What was off from the goal you are trying to achieve? What was something unexpected, that didn’t go as planned? Take note of all of these and do more research. Gather more sources (add them to your bibliography and binder) to figure out a solution. Then modify your experiment method. Write down the changes in your journal. Then try them out in the next replication.
Remember to use the correct graph when preparing to present your data. The following link is a great resource: www.bozemanscience.com/beginners-guide-to-graphing-data. Begin to think about specific details of your project and how you might present them on your board.
Happy Experimenting!!!

Class of 2023 1st Quarter College Guidance Classroom Visit Summary
Myself and Mr.I. successfully conducted the first quarter College Guidance classroom lessons to all 9th grade students on October 8th and October 9th. These are the items that were covered during the visit:
- Students logged into their Naviance (same as OSS-Connect) account and took two "personal assessments tests" ("Do What You Are and Career Interest Profiler") and checked their suitable careers based on the results of assessments.
- Learned about Florida graduation requirements for 24-credit standard diploma. http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/7764/urlt/1415forwardflyer.pdf
- GPA Calculations with regular, honors, and AP classes for the current year.
- "College and Career Readiness-9th grade" OSS-Connect account has been introduced. You may find some useful sources for the college readiness.
You can reach us at any time if you have any questions.

30/30 Dismissal Rule
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
