Chancellor Charger Weekly Update
News You Can Use for the Week of May 10, 2021
From the Principal
Greetings Chargers!
What a beautiful Mother's Day weekend. I hope that you all have had a chance to get outdoors to enjoy the weather. The school year ends in three weeks, yet there remains much to do. We are still in the midst of SOL and AP testing. Thank you for continuing to encourage your students to attend and participate in school. Have a wonderful, charged-up week!
Leading the Charge!
Cassandra Crawford, Principal
Academic Letter for the 2019-2020 School Year
As many of you know, receiving an Academic Letter is a great honor. To qualify for an Academic Letter, a student must earn at least 5 credits and a 3.50 grade-point average or better (without rounding) with no final grade lower than a “C “for the school year. This year's Academic Letter is based upon a student's grade point average for the 2019-2020 school year. This is no easy feat.
Due to COVID-19, we were unable to present students with their Academic Letter awards in the face-to-face awards ceremony befitting this honor. We have created a slideshow listing our recipients that can be accessed at the following link. Students may also pick up their award (letter, bar pin, or lamp of learning pin) at the main office beginning May 12th.
Congratulations again to our 2019-2020 Academic Letter awardees.

Message From The Superintendent
It is hard to believe that we are just a few weeks away from closing out the 2020-21 school year. Seeing more students engaged in schools and classrooms this past month has been uplifting! This week I had an opportunity to engage with members of our Parent Advisory Team and some PTA/PTO leaders. The community feedback and support of our schools have continued to be tremendous and so appreciated! I know teachers appreciated all of the wonderful gifts they received this past week during Teacher Appreciation Week.
On Monday, the School Board will meet to conduct its monthly general school board meeting. At that meeting, we will honor our Teachers of the Year as well as recognize a number of students and staff for recent accomplishments.
This past Monday, the board adopted the FY2022 school budget. As always, information is below should you desire to watch the budget work session from May 6th.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Below are some important and informative announcements and highlights:
The 2021-2022 Instructional Calendar was approved by the School Board a few months ago. Recently, guidance from the Virginia Department of Education has determined that some of our creative ideas and concepts, that were based on feedback from teachers, parents, students, and the calendar committee, would not meet the requirements to be considered as school days. Specifically, the two Family Connections days (in August) and the 8 (1 per month) asynchronous days would not count as school days. In light of this new information, Dr. Flenard, Deputy Superintendent - Chief Academic Officer, will be presenting options for the next steps for the Board to consider on Monday evening as part of the Return to Learn update.
The School Board will meet on May 10th at 6:30 p.m. for its monthly general meeting.
School Board meetings can be viewed online at https://www.regionalwebtv.com/spotsysb. Meetings are live-streamed. Recordings of each meeting may be accessed at the same link. Additionally, meetings may be viewed on cable channels: Comcast Channel 17, Cox Channel 18, and Verizon Channel 36.
Thank you again for your continued support. I hope you enjoy a beautiful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dr. S. Scott Baker Superintendent of Schools
