Last Year's Scores and PEP's

Mr. Dietrich sent me the test scores by teacher on Friday. Eighth grade ELA and Math were not sent. He will be sending these to me today. I passed out the scores to the 6th and 7th grade ELA and Math and 7th and 8th grade Alg 1 teachers on Friday. I will have the 8th grade scores out by this afternoon.

We will have individual student reports by the end of the week to send home with children. This is taking more time because students have transitioned and moved over the summer. Once we know how the students we have THIS year did on last year's test, It will be necessary to do PEP's for students with 1's and 2's, if you have not already done one. Remember: PEP's are for any student at risk. If you have a student not performing well in your classroom, please fill out a PEP to document the extra support you are giving and invite the parent in to discuss and sign. If you cannot get the parent in, please document at least two attempts on the PEP. You can do a phone conference. You will need to document this on the PEP, also. If you have a student that has behaviors which need to be addressed, they also need a PEP. See the appropriate counselor for interventions and support.

Please spend time in PLC's discussing and sharing what you understand from this data and discuss what you believe is working, what needs to be addressed/changed, and what questions you still have now that you know the specific children's scores that you taught all year. I will be monitoring the Collaborative folder for your thoughts and questions, so please be specific.

LCS Email and Personal Phones

Please be aware that if you have LCS email (gmail) downloading onto your personal phone, there is a possibility of your phone and/or email being wiped out/erased if LCS has to wipe out or erase accounts or information. LCS Technology Dept is not saying you cannot put this on your phone, but wants you to be aware that LCS will have access and control because this is a public account.

BYOD Approved

Bring Your Own Device guidelines for students was approved at the LCS Board of Ed meeting, but it is not in effect just yet. The Tech Committee will meet one more time to ensure the paperwork necessary for students and parents to complete prior to bringing devices from home. One guideline I was unaware of is that the device must have a screen of 10" or larger. This will mean that cell phones would not be an approved device. I will pass on more information as it is made available. Kim Stuart has represented us on this committee and is a great wealth of information on this subject. Thank you, Kim!

District-wide Literacy Committee

A district-wide Literacy Committee is gearing up (very similar to the Tech Committee) to research best practices in literacy. We have something very similar to this idea in our School Improvement Plan. We are wanting to find three literacy strategies that can/should be used in all subject areas. I have asked the AVID committee to look deeply at the AVID strategies to assist us in this effort. Please read the following article, "A Tale of Two Middle Schools", by two renowned literacy specialists for secondary schools, Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey. Hopefully, this will help you to see where we have been heading and why. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.

I will be out of the office most of the week. If you need me, please email. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
