A Message from Utt's Mental Health Specialist: Jennifer Caballero
It is the start of 2021 and every new year brings hope and thoughts about new goals we want to achieve for us and for our children. Being able to follow through with goals can be a difficult task, especially when the environment around us has forced us to adjust to a new way of living. The following are tips to help mentally prepare you and your children to be successful in sticking to your new year’s goals and to build new habits:
- Start with small changes: Make incremental changes for the behavior you want your child to work on. Small changes will eventually accumulate to large changes. Consistency is key.
- Update your environment: Make changes to your environment that encourages your child to stick to their goal. For example, if you would like your child to eat healthier, put away unhealthy snacks and replace them with a bowl of fruits.
- Make a plan for your child: For example, “I will read for 30 minutes after dinner every day.”
- Celebrate your child’s successes: Giving your child immediate labeled praise, or small rewards (ie. favorite snack, increased play time). This will help boost motivation in your child and allow room for practicing healthy habits.
Reminder: Digital Learning Protocol
We realize hybrid learning is new ground for all of us, but for the safety and privacy of our students, please refrain from taking pictures or video recording your child's classroom Google Meets and Zoom lessons. It is against Ed Code 51512 to record without consent. If a teacher sees that a child or parent is recording or taking photos the student will be exited for the day and reported to site administration. I will then follow up with you and your child.
Additionally, please do not interrupt the lesson or learning to ask a question. If a parent/guardian has a question or concern for the teacher please email your child's teacher and they will respond within 24 hours. Thank you.
