Spanish Department News
Spanish II students are finishing up their unit on food and restaurants. Students will be going to Main Street Café for lunch and will be ordering and paying for their meal all in Spanish! We are excited for students to have the opportunity to practice their Spanish speaking and listening skills with each other and the Spanish-speaking wait staff, try a Mexican dish that they might not typically order, make connections in our community with the language, and support a local business.
At Overture Center for the Arts Spanish students will have the opportunity to “discover what it’s like to live in—not just visit—two of the world’s great wildlife parks. Charlie Hamilton James has been shooting in Peru’s Manu National Park—the most bio-diverse place on Earth—for more than two decades. Fiercely motivated to protect the rainforest and its inhabitants, he bought a piece of land adjoining the park—only to discover that he had purchased an illegal cocaine factory along with it. His misadventures as an Amazonian landowner were documented in the BBC Television series, I Bought a Rainforest.” https://www.overture.org/events/i-bought-a-rainforest
Global Education Project (GEP)
With the help of Friends of SizaBantwana and Jen Schrab, Global Education Project members have partnered with Pen Pals in South Africa! We just wrote our first letters and await a response from other students in rural South Africa. GEP members have also been researching South African culture and presented their findings to the group so we could all learn more about the lives of the children we are writing to.
Friends of SizaBantwana, Inc. provides charitable donations of goods and money to SizaBantwana Childrens Benefit Organisation, a South African nonprofit that supports children in the rural communities surrounding Bushbuckridge in the Mpumalanga Province who are orphaned or made vulnerable as a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Math Problem of the Month
Hello from the LMC
It has been an exciting year in the LMC. Please remind your student to return all school materials with barcodes that have been checked out through the LMC. This includes library books, headphones, chargers, mice, laptops/Chromebooks, classroom novels and textbooks. All materials are due back by the last day of the school year. Materials that have not been returned will be invoiced for replacement fees. Thank you for your help with this. Returning these items ensures equitable access to library materials for all of our students.
Summer is a busy time for families and students, but reading during the summer is extremely important for your child! Research done by the National Summer Learning Association shows that reading over the summer can help prevent a decline in reading achievement. Listed below are a few ways to help promote and encourage your child to read.
· Summer reading lists for teens are available on the here and on the LMC webpage.
· Teens Top Ten list sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/teenstopten
· SYNC offers free audiobook downloads through Overdrive. Teens can download 2 free audiobooks every 2 weeks beginning April 26th through July 25th. Once the audiobook is downloaded it is theirs to keep. Visit https://audiobooksync.com/ to sign up!
· E-books are available through the Overdrive app to all Evansville High School students throughout the summer. These books can be read on any digital device.
· The Eager Free Public Library has an amazing summer reading program for teens. Sign-up begins May 25th. They will purchase a new book for every 20 hours teens read. Readers may complete up to 3 reading logs for a total of 60 hours read and 3 book prizes earned! In addition they have fabulous events just for teenagers, like Late Night After Hours and Cupcake Wars.
As always, we are happy to help students find the information and resources they are looking for. If at any time, there are questions please feel free to contact us.
